This vocabulary list has been set up for the Drawing students of Mrs. Hruby. Students should utilize this site for in-class work-time, absences or for the preparation of a quiz/test.
Font (or Text): font is another word for text, or letters.
Font Style: refers to the style of your text. For example, Times New Roman, Impact or Book Antiqua.
Font Manipulation: refers to changing font by size, spacing and/or position.
Points (or Font Size) a term that refers to the size of lettering. Lettering that is 72 points is generally 1” in height, 36 is generally ½” in height.
Character Spacing the amount of space or distance between letters, numbers or symbols. Character spacing may be a lot or a small amount.
Scale (or Scaling) refers to sizing, or the size of lan object.
Italicize this is italicizing.
Bold this is bold.
Negative Space may be the space in between letters, captured within a letter(s) or space surrounding a letter(s).
Positive Space may be the space that actually or physically takes up room. For example, the black print (or type) you see on this page is positive space.
Tension is a visual cue. It is directly related to the distance between objects. The closer the objects are together, the greater the tension. Objects further apart have lesser tension.
Width the state, quality or fact of being wide; the measurement of something from side to side.
Height The distance from the base of something to the top. For example, the distance from the bottom or your feet to the top of your head.
Horizontal Line Think of the small-case letter 't'. The horizontal line the small letter 't' moves from left to right. Also, think of the sun setting in the evening against the land - this is known as the horizon line. In this case, the land is the horizontal line.
Vertical Line Think of the small-case letter 't'. The vertical line of the small letter 't' moves from the top to bottom. Also, think of standing up - your body is vertical.
