Hung

ZAC POINT OF VIEW

With our hands tied firmly behind our backs, we walked our final walk to the gallows where we would meet our fate. We stood solemnly as our sentences were passed.
"Condemned to die for your accusations of witch craft!" Was all that I caught the judge saying. The girls, the people, never once showed us any mercy, as they showed no others.

Four other girls were condemned that day, as they now walk besides us, weeping silently. All four girls no older than sixteen, one looked to be only eleven, she was carried beside us as she struggled. I had offered to carry her but they gave me a firm kick in the shin, which instantly I recoiled. This was a cruel time, 1600's had taken its toll on the people of Salem, all because of those girls who had told them we studied the arts of witch craft... but what comes around goes around. They to will suffer as us when their true tricks are discovered.

Our long walk ends with each being led up the gallows stairs. Taylor and Isaac's complexion paled as they steadied themselves on the steps. I was scared. God must have a reason for this, so I shall not question his judgments or decisions.

I walked up the steps, my head hung high and my eyes wide.
I turned to my second eldest brother and whispered, "We shall be whole, we are God's decision now Taylor, not theirs." As my head motioned to the crowd. Finally I reached the top of the gallows and was lead to the furthest noose. Next to me was the little girl still struggling, but the noose was put on her neck beforehand. Isaac was looking at me, as the noose was put around his neck and then finally Taylor's. I saw tears flowing freely down both their cheeks, after all if we were to die we could at least have one last emotion. Crying didn't come easy for me, not even after our sentence was carried out. This all seemed like a dream, where at any moment I would wake up screaming, but it's real and yet to me all imaginary.

I snapped out of my thoughts as the rope was tightened around my neck... this was it.

The executioner left us for a brief moment only to go to the side where a wooden lever was attached to the rope. I closed my eyes for only a second then opened them once more.

I looked at Taylor he was first, the lever was pulled and his body fell with his neck snapping. The sound hung in my head for a few seconds. I glanced down and saw his lifeless body hanging in air with his neck leaning slightly forward, and his eyes wide, almost out of their eye sockets.

Next was Isaac, he bowed his head. "You're right Zac...it is God's decision now...not theirs."
I nodded silently as the lever then again pulled down, and his neck snapped with a plagued look on his face, one you might see on a dying person, not at all what I expected.

One by one the lever was pulled, each pull condemned the person to the end of his or her rope. Finally I was the only person left. I watched solemnly as the lever was pulled down. I closed my eyes. I felt my body descend below, hearing the cracking and snapping in my neck, then the air to my throat and nose was cut off and a choking sensation took over. Then suddenly it all stopped and my mind turned into darkness following the light of my soul into heaven.
