MIllions of acres of private and public land burn each year. Weather in the western U.S. is hot and dry and the winds can be very severe. Many fires are ignited by lightening strikes, which once started, often can burn out of control spreading to thousands of acres a day. Fire suppression is a main concern. One in which has been addressed by organizations like the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. The techniques of fire suppression vary. In essence, they use methods that have been implemented for years. One usage is what is called "fire breaks" and they prevent the spread of the fires. They are man-made barriers and have caused serious environmental questions. Those concerned present issues regarding the ecological impact of this sort of technique.
