In Eggbeater No. 2, Stuart
Davis made up his own geometric shapes. Geometric shapes include squares,
rectangles, triangles, circles, and ovals. What was painted was not important.
The eggbeater became a stand in for the life of the streets. What was important
was line, plane and color.
Davis said that he painted the same kinds of everyday
objects for two years. Sometimes a person gets tired of painting landscapes.
Then he paints people. Some times he gets tired of painting people then
he paints landscapes. And sometimes a boring subject may become interesting.
One day I set up an egg beater
in my studio and got so interested in it that I nailed it on a table and
kept it there to paint.
Eggbeater No. 2 is one
of 5 Eggbeater paintings. Davis also did drawings and prints using
the eggbeater ideas.
Davis wanted to be a modern
artist. The Eggbeater paintings helped him to reach this goal. Davis
stated that the Eggbeater paintings were the basis for all of his
later art work.
Some people think that the
Eggbeater paintings are like the paintings by Picasso in a style called Cubism.
Others think that the paintings are the first modern abstract
expression works. Some other people think that Eggbeater paintings
were about modern ideas.
Stuart Davis wanted his art
to be about the emotional responses (feelings) that people had when looking
at his work. Davis said, "Emotion not of the body, but of the intellect.
(mind)" Davis cared how you feel, think and react to this
painting.
