Cézanne was born in the south of France in 1839. His friend and classmate was Emile Zola. Zola became a famous writer. Young Cézanne studied law but also attended drawing classes.
His father took a stand against his art. Cézanne made up his mind that he wanted to paint. In 1861 he joined Zola in Paris.
Cézanne treated apples, faces and trees with the same care. His work took a giant leap away from making things look real. His paintings are of everyday things and people. They are about the careful mental activity of seeing.
