A lovely early Chinese export blue & white custard cup with nicely detailed strap handles. You can easily see here the origin of the English blue willow pattern. Outstanding detail, executed on fine hard paste porcelain. Nice details on the handles. About 200 years old. Note: This is sometimes known as the Ch'ien Lung blue willow pattern. For a similar pattern, see Sotheby's CHINESE DECORATIVE ARTS AND EXPORT PORCELAIN, London,30th Oct& 3rd Nov. 1987, page 475. This is before either Nanking, and later Canton patterns, were established. The establishment of the "standardized Nanking & Canton" patterns facilitated large dinner services to be matched from several voyages of the trading ships. This kind of standardization was first done with the earlier Fitzhugh pattern. 2.25" high by 3.5" widest, 2.25" top diameter. No chips hairlines or repairs; Very good condition. A wonderful example of early Chinese export blue & white! This is old estate porcelain, NOT REPRO. |
