Chapter
eight: The River
“Basil.” said Kohana. “Hai?” her friend asked. “I’m thirsty.” said the
princess. Basil thought for a minute. Then she remembered…. “I know
where
there’s a river.” she said at last. “Where?” Kohana asked. “Follow me.”
said Basil as she rose to her feet. Kohana followed her friend through
the tall grass.
“How much farther?” Kohana asked. They had been walking through moss
and
puddles. “We’re almost there.” Basil answered. Then she pushed aside
some
thick bamboo branches. A long, deep river sparkled through the bamboo
and
leaves. Kohana’s eye lit up. “Now aren’t you glad I dragged you out
here?”
Basil asked. “HAI!” the princess yelled. Then she began running towards
the river. Basil stopped her. Kohana looked up. “You must not tell
anybody!”
her friend warned her. “Hai san.” said Kohana. Then Basil let her go.
Kohana
began running and her friend followed. The girls drank, swam, and
splashed
around in the river.
