How do you use pillars in a multi tiered cake?

***************

If you are new at using pillars, I suggest starting with the push- in style. no dowel rods are needed because the pillars go all the way to the bottom and rest on the cake board of the tier underneath. NEVER transport a tiered cake assembled unless it is stacked construction(which is the in thing now anyway) Wilton shows pillar cakes in their Yearbooks because they sell pillars but brides are into stacked tiers right now. The push-in pillars can be placed at home before you decorate so you know the "facing" of the design, then take tiers apart to transport but leave pillars sticking in the cake till you assemble at the destination. Hidden pillars are used to seperate the tiers by such a small amount that the pillars are not even seen, hence the term "hidden pillars". This is also known as "floating tiers" because the tiers appear to be floating above each other with no visible connection. This is mainly used to create a space to place flowers, tulle, greenery etc. in between tiers without the pillared look. ~ Suzy
