How do you make a rose out of buttercream icing?
***************
I'll tell you, i started making roses years and years ago, at least 20 and just kinda guessed at how to do it. than when i started "learning" how to decorate cakes this past february i got the francis kuyper tape and realized she pretty much did roses the same as i did. it is very close to the wilton rose but i dont count my leaves, just when it looks right i quit and i also dont use a different tip to make my mound. i just use the same one. my one problem with roses is, i have arthritis in my fingers so i cant make my icing as stiff as i would like. the ones on this cake were an exception. usually they arent near as high. so what i do is make a mound with the 104 or equvalent tip and than with the narrow end down and the wide end almost touching the rose, i start at the very tip of the mound and make a sweeping petal halfway around the mound going down as i turn the rose. if that looks like a good bud i go on but if not, i start again at the tip towards the middle of of the last petal and do the same thing. than still keeping my wide end close to the mound i lower the tip to about 1/4 of the way down the mound in the middle of the last petal and sweep up with a petal, repeat from the middle of this petal, till completely around, than on the next round of petals, pull the wide end of the tip back from the mound just a bit and repeat the petals around and finally on the last round, pull the wide end further away from the mound to where you are almost holding the back of your back at about 6:30 and do the last round. when making the petals, i meant to say, sweep up and around a bit, than down and end. ~ Sher
