Brush tip 8

Beginners to the world of painting may be bewildered by the array of materials and prohibitive cost of setting up. Welcome to economy corner. Fist we shall begin at the least expensive end of painting supports and work our way upwards. Commercially prepared boards are compressed, primed hardboard. Canvas boards are cardboard with muslin or a synthetic alternative glued to the surface, then primed. The boards I prepare for my class are durable and economical. Purchase a sheet of untempered hardboard and saw into A3 sized sections. The primer is 6 parts white matt emulsion paint to 1 part PVA glue. Mix thoroughly and apply with a small sponge roller. Coat the smooth side first, using criss-cross strokes changing to straight, finishing in one direction. Paint subsequent coats at right angles to the previous layer. Turn over and paint the rough side in the same manner. Continue until 3 coats cover the smooth side and two the rough. This prevents warping. Many of my intermediate class still prefer to use them. So they are tried and tested.
