Brush tip 7

The mixing of Green causes great concern to people learning to paint and also the more experienced painter. In landscape painting it is important to become confident in creating a variation of Green. As in all colour perspective more White is added in the distance and also greying of colours. This we discussed in a previous brush tip.

Distance

Distant Green is mixed using Yellow Ochre plus Cerulean Blue plus White. Each time White is added, more Yellow must accompany it, otherwise a Mint colour is created. Less White is added as you proceed towards the mid-tone.

Mid-Tone

Mid-tone Green is made using Cad Yellow, French Ultramarine plus White. The same applies when adding White as above. Cad Yellow no. 9 is used to produce an earthy colour and Cad Yellow 13 produces a purer Green.

Foreground

· Cad Yellow 13 or 9 plus French Ultramarine

· Taynes Grey plus Cad Yellow

· Ivory Black plus Cad Yellow

· Yellow Ochre plus French Ochre

Cad Red can be added to grey down colour. A small amount of Viridian Green may be added to Cad Yellow plus French Ultra to give vibrancy.
