Brush tip 4
Colour recession is an important ingredient of landscape painting. To obtain a three-dimensional
image, care must be taken to create an illusion of distance and depth. This is achieved
by making the distance pale by adding white and no detail. For middle distance, less
white is used and perhaps a small amount of detail. The foreground has much more
detail and full strength of colour. When this rule is followed, a realistic painting
will be produced, drawing the viewer’s eye into the scene.
