Brush Tip 12

Preparing Canvas on Panel

(1) Size the panel as described in tip 10, using warm glue. Then 1 coat of jellied glue is applied with the palm of the hand onto the canvas, which is placed on the panel with enough excess to create a margin on the underside

(2) The excess is best scraped off with a palette knife. When dry – sand.

(3) Paint on acrylic gesso as described in Brush Tip 11. Sand between coats when dry. Remember also to coat the side not to be painted several times as well. About 4 or 5 coats are necessary to create a smooth surface. The finish required depends on personal taste.

Traditional gesso is much more complicated and for these tips, it isn’t necessary.
