Observation is the greatest painting aid. It’s free; it’s light and doesn’t take
up room. Learn to develop it. Really look at objects and nature. Study the form,
notice light direction and how shadows fall. When out walking, mix colours on the
palette of your mind. Distant colours recede in strength: they become lighter. And
as they advance towards the foreground, they become stronger. This produces a beautiful
