Work in Progress: Battle for a Tortured Soul

September 11, 2004
This is one of the largest and most ambitious works I've ever attempted. Measuring roughly 5'4" x 4', this painting was conceived as a long term projectI committed myself to the idea of working on other pieces simultaneously with this particular painting due to it's size and complexity.

The idea for this painting has been germinating in the back of my head for many years. I consider a handful of paintings that I have completed from as far back as 1998 as studies for this painting. Based on a battle between Heaven and Hell theme, I have attempted to present this idea in an updated format that is composed from a more modern spatial concept. Though inspired on many levels by the 20th Century Synthetic Cubism championed by such great artists as Picasso, my goal is not to recreate this particular movement but to learn from it and apply it to my own personal style and concept of art. I continue to surprise myself with this painting as it slowly unfolds and reveals it's particular characteristic to me.
