I hope everyone enjoys our list. Any and all weavers are more than welcome to join. Please do not post these digest in any public forum. Unfortunately there are people out there who might abuse the addresses on this digest. If you read something in a digest and you would like to reply, send it to me so I can include it in the next digest. Your introductions and/or comments have no word limits. The chit-chattier (Is that a word?) the better. Here's a little bit of information about myself. I am a 26 year old guy from Indianapolis, IN. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from IUPUI (Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ. at Indianapolis). Even though my degree reads Purdue University, I am an avid IU fan. My mom, Norma, has been weaving for about three years and the house hasn't looked the same since that infamous day. We are constantly having to rake the carpet. Oh well, she enjoys it and that is all that is important. No need to fret, "Weavers Words" will never be turned over to an automated list server. If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve the digest, let me know. After all, it is your list. I hope everyone enjoys "Weavers Words". Remember, if you have any basketry questions needed answered, please ask them. Someone has the answer. I live in a small rural community in Iowa called Parkersburg. I have been weaving for three years and have established a company called "Berta's Baskets". I supply 13 stores in Iowa with my hand-crafted baskets and one in Wisconsin. I also hit 8-12 craft shows a year. I have five children and I am a full-time+ basket weaver. My husband, Rick, makes all of my wire handles. The kids also work for me cutting out baskets, making bows, tagging baskets, etc. to earn extra $. I average 15-28 baskets a day...only because my husband helps lash rims after he comes home from work. I love to create and design new baskets. My goal behind my company was to supplement our income and yet be a stay-at-home mom. I love weaving and am a true basket nut! (David: Thank you for e-mailing today. I have been weaving & a member of NCBA for 9 years.I don't have as much time to weave as I would like, especially since I got 24 hour internet access in October!! I make mostly traditional style baskets with reed & cane. I hope to retire from Bellsouth in 6 years, then I will have more time to weave baskets. A friend gave me a bushel of black walnuts last week. I soaked some a few years ago, but have since heard of using ammonia. I would appreciate some tips from other weavers on the best way to make walnut stain. My name is Debi Geosits and I live between the Poconos and the Lehigh Valley in northeastern PA. I am a wife and mom of two teenagers. I have been an elementary teacher for 23 years. I always have more hobbies than time, so life is never boring. I have been weaving for a little more than 3 years. I take lessons every Thursday evening and it is my therapy for the week. I have found that reading the Basket Digest for the past month has made me realize that the basket world is much larger and more involved than I ever realized. I have also found that very few people in PA are responding to these forums. Does this mean that in PA basket weaving is not very popular? I would love to know if there are any groups or conventions in my area. I look forward to all the great dialog that transpires through these forums. Have a great weekend! I've been weaving basket for about 20 years now. For the last few years I haven't had a lot of time for weaving, so I have concentrated on just weaving what I like for fun - and taking classes now and then. I do miniatures with waxed linen, and also work with cedar bark (both red and yellow), cedar root, and spruce root. I enjoy doing more contemporary styles based on traditional techniques used here in the Pacific Northwest. I've done a little work with willow, and just completed a great class with Sally Goymer (a doll cradle). Now, I'm getting prepared for two weekend classed with Holly Churchill doing Haida baskets, and will be going to Basketry Focus the first part of June. I also stay fairly active with our Guild, Northwest Basket Weavers. Happy weaving to all! Welcome to the new list. For those of you who do not know me I am Billie Dorris and I live in Virginia Beach, Va. I have been weaving for almost 15 years. My first basket was an egg basket but rarely make them now. I make mostly splint baskets but am now doing a lot of Nantuckets. Do remember if I have shared this tip before or not but as I just used it again and was impressed with what a difference it made will share it again. For those of you who use a lot of wooden bases (will also work for handles) go to your hardware store and buy a spray can of sanding sealer. Sand your wooden pieces and spray them with the sealer . Then sand again lightly with a finishing sandpaper. Feel how smooth they are even before the final finish is applied. This also protects them from the water that invariably gets on them while weaving. I have even done this with the baskets that I dip in the black walnut stain. It allows the stain to penetrate more evenly and gives a much nicer finish. Yes it does mean that you must plan ahead(something I am not known for) but it is worth the effort. The spray dries fairly quickly so that is a help. I did a bunch of them the other day and it really didn't take long. I know wood workers always use sanding sealer before they finish their products and think it is a good thing for us weavers to start doing. I do not get to weave as often as I want because my full time job interferes. I also have a 3 year old that does not understand my need for weaving. I am looking forward to my first basket show and my third teaching experience at a local festival called the Dulcimer Festival June 6th and 7th. I am very excited and nervous. I do not have as many baskets as I would like to have. I had surgery this week and thought I could weave my heart out while recovering but did not feel up to weaving. I enjoy all types of baskets but really like large baskets. I have a few patterns but would like to know the names of others and who wrote them. Thanks for any help you can give me and I am looking forward to hearing from everyone via the Weaver's Word. My name is Nancy Hedberg and I live in Jonesborough, TN. Jonesborough is the oldest town in the state and is located in the northeast corner near the North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky borders. I live in an old house in the historic district. My husband and I spend most of our time doing restoration. I teach 3rd grade at one of the local elementary/middle schools. I also have 3 teenage boys. One is 19 and away at college, the others are 16, twins, and high school students. In my spare time I weave Nantucket Lightship baskets. I collect other types of baskets, mostly antiques, but have never been interested in weaving any other type. I've been doing Nantuckets for about 10 years and feel that I'm still learning. Each basket has its own personality and some are more of a challenge than others. I'm really looking forward to meeting the other weavers on this list. @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Subject:Re: "Weavers Words" Date:Sat, 3 May 1997 11:51:04 -0500 (CDT) From:cliftons@ix.netcom.com To:davidc@iei.net Hi David and all weavers: Just a short and quick intro as requested. I have decided that I prefer to weave one-of-a-kind, keep it for myself, or give it away to weave more and not do production weaving. I like working with oak but don't get much of an opportunity except when going to the McColley's in WV for one week out of the year. I have enjoyed going to the NCBA Convention the past five years and would love to get to Michigan's some time soon. My ultimate dream is to hit the lottery and in a luxury tour bus, take all my friends around the country on a basket weaving trip for a year. Anyone else interested? Speaking of trips, my husband has offered to take me to Nantucket this summer. Any suggestions from anyone on where to go and whom to see. Can it be seen in a day and not stay over on the island? :) Meredith @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Subject:Weavers Words Date:Sat, 3 May 1997 21:04:15 -0700 From:"LORI HOPKINS" To: Hell-o, I'm a weaver for about 8 or so years now and still haven't had enough. I enjoy weaving with flat and round reed but will try anything. I came across a good buy on some sisal twine and it looks like it will take the place of #2 round reed very well without the breakage. I have even died some ,can't wait to weave with it. My husband and I run a campground in the northeastern part of Pa. This is the start of our busy season but as soon as things slow down a little I'll have more questions and maybe an answer or two. I love the "Weavers Words" to share with all ,it also gives great motivation . Maybe I'll meet a few of you from other E-mails. Here's hoping for a good start with these Weavers Words!!!! Kristin Monastyrski/ e-mail: monast@iquest.net/ I consider myself close to advanced and interested in all forms except freeform and weird "artsy" baskets. I love bark baskets and have a bunch of red and yellow cedar that needs split out. Carol Madison and Donna Carlson just gave me a quickie demonstration and I'm anxious to get to it. After doing that I will be ready to get back to traditional reed. No questions at present. Hope this lists works. Good luck. I wish you good luck and lots of participation. I have just returned from the Indiana Basketmakers Association annual Convention and have to comment on how many wonderful people I met this weekend. Since I volunteer a lot of my time to the IBA - because I REALLY want to help - and it's FUN too - I am in contact with a lot of people. I cannot tell you how many people made a point to talk to me and thank myself and all the volunteers who put together this type of convention. I really appreciate your favorable, and yes sometimes unfavorable, comments and try to pass on all suggestions for improvements. It takes many generous people to make this work - from 1 hour of your time to as much as you can give - and believe me it is appreciated!! It takes over 1000 volunteer hours to host a convention - and that is not counting the hours generously donated by our committee chairmen. We have a wonderful organization of 1400 people which continues to grow and improve each year. ALL are invited to participate and have input - so send me a message for information or if you would like to get involved with the Indiana Basketmakers Association. We are growing larger each year and all help is appreciated and wanted. Since I will be co-chairman of the 1998 IBA convention - along with my very good friend Phyllis Walla-Catania - I can tell you to be on the lookout for some changes and surprises. One "preview" that I can tell you about right now is there will be a "Volunteers only" drawing and a very special prize will be given to the lucky winner - so think about ways you can help make INDY WEAVE 98 a great success and we hope to hear from you. Be sure to keep the dates March 25-29,1998 in mind as you make you travel plans! I do theme or costume events mostly to do with The Renaissance period. I worked the large Renaissance faire in Devore CA and Black Point for years., I am taking this year off to regroup and learn a few new styles. I still of course am doing several small shows throughout the year and teaching classes-besides my day job- life is never dull but often messy. My husband Stan is also a basket maker. He complains about the mess much less since I taught him. Often I just make hats and leave all the basketmaking to him. We are a good team. Since I'm sure many people were suffering "Basket List Withdrawal", there are probably a lot of grateful weavers out there. I've been weaving for about 2 1/2 years. Starting weaving with my best buddy Norma Collins and I've hooked ever since. I've met a lot of wonderful new friends through weaving for which I am very grateful for. The IBA Convention was a wonderful weekend! I had such a good time, although was totally worn out! I did a couple of twill weaves at convention and feel confident (finally) that I can do a twill. Can hardly wait to do my next one. My teachers for the twills were Christine Lamb and Tressa Sulzar. They were great!! Hope everyone else had a good time and I can hardly wait till next year! Thanks again David for starting this. @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ If for any you would ever like to cancel your subscription, simply send me a message with "unsubscribe" as your subject.
