This is a tryptic acrylic on canvas and acrylic on cotton (middle painting), 4 feet by 10 feet approx.

From black and red series, title: Red Cloth Offering
The middle painting is a
common red cotton cloth that is offered during many Plains Indian ceremonies as a gift. In this
case it is being offered to a warrior who has died in battle. It could be a battle from the past US and Indian conflicts,
wars, or US conflicts and wars overseas.

Artist statement (September 2000)

Within this "black-red" = sik mạ̀kh in Blackfeet language, art expo is a hommage to the many artists and art teachers  who have impressed, inspired, motivated me into trying to express that most greatest urge to make and create art works. There are too many people to name, but if you are familiar with art history some hommages should stand out.

I have chosen to go back to some basic early foundations in my art education. The black-red series led me to rediscover the profound simplicity in my native cultural heritage..but it went even further than this.

Black and red has a lasting quality to say the least. In our world many cultures and ages have found these two colors to be powerful statements  for life and death. A mystical and magical state of being was formulated with our ancient forefathers and mothers.

I have broken down the color elements into their basics and from this point moved into pictorial images or geometric designs, or contemporary movements in art, then back to what might describe me and my indianness through this process by going back and forth, mixing my outer influences into the "black-red" series. I am discovering the myths behind art making. Where do I go from here?

It seems to me I am destined to become a myth maker. From the coming new series of art works, I will continue with the "sunburst" design found on buffaloe robes throughout the prairie plains native peoples.

Art is deeper than we allow ourselves to think. Unlike music which can be listened to, art is visual, but if you look long enough, art will speak to you. Through the ages it will tell you stories, myths about life and the continuation of death. There is an undying spirit in art I have found: it can be touched on many levels.
