Perrin is of high social class in his society of elves. From their history, three elves fought to save their home and became victorious. From then on, those three elves were worshipped and considered the protectors. It became custom to name the next in line after themselves, and each in line would be the next protector and priest.
Perrin is training at the temple in his homeland to be a priest as he should be. He doesn't enjoy the entire act prestigious or polite bit, his course language proves this. Until his training is complete, he remains a hand at the temple.
