Where my musical soul can rest

Here is where I will rant, rave, and disect music

Okay, where to start... I guess the first thing would be to outline my musical tastes. Personally, I detest anything that is made for the sole purpose of causing stupid teenage girls to excersise their vocal cords, while a bunch of pretty boys on stage sings songs about pointless bullshit to a cliched rhythm and beat. I like real music that has thought and energy put into it. Talent helps as well.

I'm pretty certain that both the Backstreet Boys and N Sync are the same people, and that they are also demonic souls from the Underworld sent to hypnotize the ignorant, and annoy the intelligent.

However, there are upsides to the musical universe. I'd like to think that I have a nice and eclectic taste in music. My mp3's are a nice mix of blues, rock, alternative, classic, classical, and new age. As I type this, I'm listening to They Might Be Giants, and now it switches over to Stone Temple Pilots.

But, enough of me. I find that everything on MTV is crap, and even VH1, which I used to turn to for at least a little good music, has gone the way of MTV. So, basically I have to rely on downloading to get my music fix each day, even though imesh is being something of an uppity bitch right now. It won't download anything for the moment, and I really want Rondo alla Turca. Ah well, c'est la vie. There will be more later.

Whatever happened to the Beatles? I'm sitting here listening to "Across the Universe," and I'm curious, why are bands today so talentless? Don't get me wrong, there are many good bands around, but it seems the best never get the credit they deserve. I yearn for the time when music had a purpose, beyond just sounding good and appealing to stupid teeny boppers.

I admit I wasn't alive in the sixties and early seventies, but it seems to me that music was made not only to have good rhythms and such, but also to convey a message or thought of the musicians. Now all we hear are songs about wanting to get with that cute boy at school with his hair spiked up in the front and no personality what so ever. It makes me want to wretch.

So, it makes me curious about how the world changed(America specifically) so that style overcame substance. I guess I'm just a romantic, but I think music should come from within, not inspired by the check behind it. Music has changed from an artform to a commercial, and its sad.

I'm on a real jazz kick lately. I've fallen for Dave Brubeck, specifically the sad Fujiyama which just makes me want to weep sometimes. Some songs of his any jazz lover should download are the above mentioned lamentation, and Take Five, which is another favorite of mine.

I've also grown attached to the Black Crowes recently. I'm not sure how to describe their music; to me it seems like a mixture of classic country(when it was actually good), some hard rock, jazz and blues, the Crowes mix it all very well to create an interesting sound. The song Good Friday is just perfect for a lovelorn soul, because its not like a lot of love inspired songs out there. Its more true to real life, because, as much as it sucks, love does not always conquer all.

But anyway, I've run out of energy for now. So long.
