Wilfredo Lam Home Lam 2 Lam 3 Lam 4 DADA Purchase Spaightwood Galleries Wilfredo Lam (Cuban, 1902-1982) Wilfredo Lam grew up in Cuba with a grandmother who practised Voodoo rituals and came of age in Paris, where he and Picasso became very close friends and artistic associates. Returning to Cuba, Lam's work continued to mix Afro-Cuban and European influences. After the war, Lam travelled before finally settling in Paris, with side trips to Itlay.

Moreover, he helped (with his fluent command of English) to bring Americans working in Paris during the early 1930s together with the Continental artists who were influential in shaping European modernism. He was friendly with School of Paris artists, yet maintained close contacts with Dutch, Russian, and British movements as well.
In 1974 he held his first personal exhibition abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1977 he undertook study trips to Italy, France and Spain and in 1978 held the first of his exhibitions in Lecco, Italy. In 1979 he began sculpting in stone and marble in Paris and Carrara and in 1982 established his base in Lecco where he lives and works still carrying out sculpture in Statuary Carrara marble and Portugese pink marble. Atchugarry has, up until now, held more than seventy personal exhibitions as well as numerous collective ones both in Italy and abroad. .
In 1920 Xceron moved to New York and became friends with Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Max Weber , Abraham Walkowitz, and Joseph Stella. He exhibited in the New York Independents' exhibitions in 1921 and 1922. Xceron was finally able to travel to Paris in 1927. There he began writing reviews of the latest in art for the Boston Evening Transcript and the Paris edition of the Chicago Tribune. About the same time, his own painting underwent a dramatic transition.
