The Roundel


The Roundel was invented by A.C. Swineburne as a variation on the French Rondeau. Basically, the satnzas are shorter. In a Roundel, the first few words in the first line are used as a separate refrain phrase.


Stanzas : 3
Stanza Type : Alternate between Quattrains and a triplet
Lines : 11
Syllables : Unlimited, but every line is equal, except for the refrains
Accents : Varies, but at least 50% accentual
Rhyme :

bab

stanza 3:
abaB

note : the capital B is the refrain, the first few words of the poem that make a complete phrase, and is repeated in it's entirety in the last line of the poem.It need not be of the same number of syllables as the rest of the lines.
