Nataku, in my opinion, is one of the best characters in X/1999, and, again, is one that didn't get explained in the anime. He just killed, and for some obscure reason it was never explained why.
Well, the truth of it is, that Nataku is technically human, but only barely. His 'original' was a young girl destined to be a Chi no RYu, but she died and her grandfather recreated her in the form of the 'Nataku'. Nataku is named after a soulless Chinese god, and this is very apt - he is emotionless and genderless. But I like to think that he had a soul. You may have noticed I call him 'him' even though he's sexless. I do this for three reasons - 1 is I prefer to think of him as male, so I can drool over him. 2 is that he looks male to me. And 3 is that in the third manga, Sonata, Satsuki says that one of the guards reported seeing a young *male* with a bloodstained hand. So I just go for the 'male' choice...
Anyhow, he was created to be the replacement of the man's granddaughter (or something like that ^_^() ) but he is emotionless. He kills because it is the only thing he can do. The pattern on his forehead is a lotus, and you'll have to check out the symbolism page for the meaning of that ^_^
