Comments:

I had trouble adjusting the contrast and the shadows; looks worse than on the print but the
enlargements turned out beautiful. Feel free to comment.

I had tried to adjust the shadows because it was so dark and unfortunately the highlights became too
bright. The originals are not this bad. I shoot a Christmas picture of my daughter (and wife) every year in front of the tree. The shots were taken on Agfa Portrait 120 film exposed at 160ASA. I used an Elincrom 500 Monolight (studio flash) with a small Chimera Softbox just slightly off to the right of the camera and raised a few feet above the camera and angled down. I usually shoot at F8 or F11 with them far enough in front of the tree so it's slightly out of focus but not enough so you can't recognise what it is. I was using a Bronica ETRs with a 150mm lens.

PHOTO BEING CRITIQUED Christmas
INITIAL REACTION Such happy faces! Isn't Christmas a wonderful time of year!
TECHNICAL ASPECTS Well composed, nice positions, eye glint is always a plus, exposure is perfect. Reducing your flash intensity a bit might have minimize the hot spots on their cheeks and lips and kept the pic from being obviously flashed.
ARTISTIC ASPECTS Their expressions are precious. The Christmas tree in the bg provides a clear time-line and adds to the already joyous feel of the pic.
OTHER COMMENTS I wonder if the Christmas tree being lit a bit more and/or adding more dof would have improved the pic? Overall, I love it!

PHOTO BEING CRITIQUED Christmas
INITIAL REACTION Oh those smiles!!!! They bring joy to the heart and that is what Christmas is about.
TECHNICAL ASPECTS I like how you moved in really close for the photo, framing those beautiful smiles .. wonderful!
The Christmas tree is out of focus enough to not be distracting but in-focus enough to tell the viewer about the day and scene.
Beautiful glint in their eyes, adding to the merriment of the moment.
I'm not sure where the contrast issues are in the scanning... looks wonderful.
ARTISTIC ASPECTS the mood is very clear in the photo -- happy, family, holiday times together. Everything points towards that sense of joy.
OTHER COMMENTS a great photo!
