Summary of the Aeneid

Each book can be divided into three parts or "acts".

Aeneid Book 1

Book 2
 
1 - 267 Aeneas narrates the sack of Troy

Book 3
 
1 - 291 Aeneas' narration of his travels. Their long journey begins with visits to various places
292 - 505 They visit Helenus at Buthrotum. He gives them a prophecy
506 - 718 The Trojans obey the prophecy. They visit the island of the Cyclops
Book 4
 
1 - 295 Aeneas and Queen Dido are united in love
296 - 503 On divine instruction, Aeneas prepares to leave Carthage and Did0
504 - 705 Dido commits suicide and curses Aeneas as he departs.
Book 5
 
1 - 103 Return to Sicily, the Trojans mark the anniversary of Anchises' death
104 - 603 The Funeral Games of Anchises
604 - 871 The Trojans depart minus the old and weary.Aeneas builds them a city
Book 6
 
1 - 267 Reaching Italy, their fate is foretold by the Sybil of Cumae
268 - 678 Aeneas visits the Underworld in search of his father
679 - 901 Reunion with Anchises, who shows him a vision of the future of his family and Rome
