What the public doesn't know is that owner Norman Osborn developed a mystery drug called "Oz" -- which he tested on animals, with a particular interest in spiders. One of the arachnids in question bit young Peter Parker, a student touring Osborn's facilities. Fearing a lawsuit, Osborn kept a watchful eye on Peter and was prepared to have him assassinated. But the teenager began to react strangely to the spider bite, exhibiting arachnid-like abilities far beyond human.
Osborn came to the conclusion that the Parker accident actually was one of his greatest achievements. He then decided to make himself the next Oz guinea pig, injecting the wonder drug without the catalyst of the arachnid. But the experiment went horribly awry: A fiery lab explosion killed almost everyone who had witnessed Osborn's terrifying transformation. His mysterious hulking frame appeared at his own mansion in the middle of the night, destroying it in a ball of fire. The explosion killed his wife; his son -- Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn -- barely escaped the horror.
The next day, the Osborn goblin attacked Peter's high school. But was he there to kill the fledgling wall-crawler, or his own son? Not knowing the insane attacker's true identity, Peter donned his Spider-Man costume and tried his best to subdue his first super-powered foe. But the myriad questions raised by the villain's appearance may never be answered, as he seemed to plummet to his death from atop a bridge following an amazing battle involving the authorities and New York's newest hero.
