Thomas Lane was a commander of a company from his local militia
(1797 road record, page 34; tax list, pages 113 & 119).
The November 1797 road record stated that his company was “out of the Blue Ridge.”
The 1796 tax list (page 119) states “Capt. Lain’s Co., on east side of ridge.”

Biography of Hugh C. Lane from Goodspeed for Northwestern Arkansas page 1252/3.
Hugh Collins Lane,
one of the prominent citizens of Ivy Tp., Franklin Co., Ark.,
was born in Edwards County, Ill., on the 16th of February, 1835, and is
one
of the eleven children born to the marriage of Joseph Lane and Mary
Hamm,
who were born in Virginia and Illinois, and died in Arkansas in 1852
and
1867, respectively.
The father was about sixty-three years of age at the time of his death,
and
had been twice married, his first union resulting in the birth of five
children, Jesse, a resident of Barry County, Mo., being the only one
now
living. His last union resulted in the birth of seven sons and four
daughters, the following of shom are living: Rhoda, widow of William
Priett,
Martha, wife of James Morgan; Kimberly, Hugh C., and A.S.
In 1838 the Lane family came from Arkansas locating in Franklin County,
where the father became a successful farmer. He and wife had for many
years
been members of the Primitive Baptist Church, and he was a participant
in
the Black Hawk War, and in his political views was a Democrat.
Hugh C. remained on the old home farm for about one year after his
father's
death, and then went to Texas, thence to Missouri, and then to
Tennessee,
and after a short stay in Louisiana returned home to Arkansas. In 1854
he
drove a herd of cattle to California, and remained there two years
working
in the mines. The following year he spent in teaming from Sacramento
City
to the mines, and then spent some time in working on a ranche on the
San
Joaquin River, after which he returned home via the Isthmus of Panama
and
New Orleans. He earned quite a handsome of money during his sojourn in
the
West, and on his return home engaged in farming, and has now a good
farm of
22o acres, 120 of which are under good cultivation and well improved.
During the late war he lost all his property with the exception of a
pony,
but by industry and proper management is now well fixed financially.
During 1861 he was engaged in teaming, but in July of the following
year
enlisted in the Confederate Cavalry service, being a participant in the
Battles of Pea Ridge, Elk Horn, Oak Hill, Prairie Grove, and many
skirmishes. He was captured once, but succeeded in effecting his
escape.
In 1859 he was married to Miss Emily Fisher, a daughter of Joshua
Fisher.
She was born in Crawford County, Ark., July 27, 1884, and is the mother
of
the following children: Harvey S., Theopholis, Maggie E., Rosanna,
Bradley
Lee, Josie, Jackson C., Ada and Richard. Mr. Lane is a member of the
Primitive Baptist Church, a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a
Democrat
in his political views. He has always been considered one of the
leading
citizens of the county, and is ever ready to support enterprises which
are
calculated to benefit the community in which he resides.
