THE ARK AS A SYMBOL OF CHRIST

DR. JEFF HAMM

In seeking to understand the shadow cast of Messiah by the Ark of the Covenant, we must understand that it

is a physical symbol of God’s presence. A place of mediation between God and man; a place that could

represent both the needs of man and yet at the same time be fit for the glorious presence of God. In essence,

it represents both an alliance with God and with man. This unique association is a revelation of Christ who is

both God and Man.

This association is first discovered in the fact that God Himself calculated the design, the pattern or

blueprint of the Ark. It was the understanding of Paul that the Ark itself was a copy of the true place of God’s

presence in heaven itself. “For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the

true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.”1 Men as the agents of God, then

physically assembled the Ark of material substance according to Divine instructions.

Secondly, this acquaintance is revealed in the fact man assembled the Ark according to the Divine plan.

Here is a wonderful picture of the fashioning of the Lords body. God had a special plan for humanity that would

change the course of history. In order to carry out His plan it would be necessary for Him to move to the earth.

Just as in the Old Testament, The Most Holy Place would be a special place for Him to live among His People.

A special design for His house or body was prepared. It became necessary that human agency be used in the

construction process of this house, much like the human agency in the construction process of the Ark of the

Covenant.

Mary, a virgin was chosen to be, as it were, the human agent for this special home. God Himself, the

designer or architect of the home, when the time had come, paid a visit to Mary to give her everything necessary

to do the job. For the following nine months, her womb became the preparation place of the habitation of the

Lord. “So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and

faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the only begotten Son of the Father.”2 Some would have

us to believe that Mary was the mother of God. However, she was used of the Father in the natural process of

carrying the Son of God; therefore, she became the mother of His humanity.

The plan God used in the design process for a fleshly home for His Son to dwell, was understood early

in Scripture. In fact, the plan had been put together at the foundations of the world. “He indeed was

foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”3 When one

considers the blueprint and design, God prepared for His Son, there is a lot of detail work. For before the Law

was ever given, or any sacrifice prescribed by it. Its complete sacrificial system was appointed in reference to

this fore appointed Lamb, and consequently from Him derived all the significance and virtue of Torah. The

construction of the Ark of the Covenant was appointed in reference to the physical visitation of the Son. The

wise man Solomon said, “Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; By

knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.”

It is important to note that atonement was not an afterthought or an addition to the original plan on the

part of God. It entered into His plan when He made the world, and was implemented in His purposes from

eternity. Some would have us to think that Jesus was a device to supply a defect in the system. Nevertheless, the

plan for Jesus was not adopted because the system did not work well, or because God had been disappointed. It

was arranged before man was created, and when none but God could know the plan, God planned.
