Dave Grohl: Hi, everybody. My name's Dave, and I sing in the Foo Fighters. We were supposed to play here [in Columbus, Ohio] tonight, but I'm sorry to say that I am sick as sh**. That's right. I am having a hard time keeping anything in either part of my body right now.
We went out last night. We had a great time. I was anxious to come to Columbus, because I don't know how many of you know this, but I was actually born in Warren, Ohio, and the first two years of my life, I lived here in Columbus. I think on High Street, right near the campus. I actually lived there when the Kent State thing happened.
But anyway, I'm so, so sorry. If I were to come on stage, you'd actually see me puke and sh** my pants, I think. So I'm gonna stay here on the bus and let Muse play a longer show. Get ready for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, because that's worth all the tickets in the world. And sorry, I promise we'll come back really soon. I promise I won't have a gnarly stomach flu, and thanks for caring about me, even if you don't. Bye!
MTV News: How did you get sick? What happened?
DG: Hi, I'm named The Morning After. I'm the Prince Of The Morning After. And you know what? I had a blast last night. I had one of the most amazing nights of my life. I swear to God, I don't do it that often. I know we're supposed to make it look like "we buddy bro' down" with the crew and all the bands every night and go get wasted at karaoke bars, but it just doesn't happen that way. And I really didn't get that drunk. I really wasn't that drunk. I wasn't. I swear. But I woke up this morning and felt so... you know what? When I first woke up, I didn't feel that bad. How graphic do you want me to get?
MTV: Graphic.
DG: Graphic? [Cringes] I woke up and headed straight to the toilet, and I sat there for a while, wondering, "What's my body up to?" Then I went back to bed. But then, funny, I had to go back to the bathroom again. And again. And again. Until there wasn't much left. Then I get on the bus and I think, "Whoa, I better get some diapers or something for the show." Then I started getting nauseous, nauseated. And by the time we got here, it was chills and fever and pain and whatever, the whole nine.
We don't cancel shows often. I feel so bad that I'm sitting in the bus outside of a however-many-capacity venue -- a big venue of people that are going to be pissed that I'm not playing. And you know what? I'm so, so sorry. I'm so sorry. So I swear to God, I don't know what to say. Look at this. This is ridiculous! I want to f***in' barf! See, this is ridiculous. This is not good for my image. "Hey, what do you know? He gets diarrhea and pukes. Wow, he's not a rock star."
MTV: You're going to come back and make this date up?
DG: Yeah. Well, I know that we'll definitely come back here. I mean, we won't come back to this venue, because we can't draw 20,000 people. But definitely, we'll come back and play a show for everybody.
MTV: How has it been playing with Chili Peppers? How has the tour been? Do you like these guys? Do you have fun with these guys?
DG: The tour up to this point has been great. The tour up to this point has been our first at arena-rocking. We've never really opened up for a band before. We opened up for The Prodigy before a couple times, and we opened up for Rage Against The Machine, but [now] we've gone on a whole tour with another band, and I really wasn't sure what to expect. But it seems that as long as you have a huge light show behind you and a wireless guitar unit where you can run around the arena, they like you. It doesn't even matter how you sound.
It's been very, very fun, and the Chili Peppers every night are amazing. Watching Flea and John and Chad and Anthony, it's inspiring. There aren't many bands that I go on tour with that I really watch every night. I don't watch their whole show every night, but I definitely watch a little bit. And Flea just completely amazes me. That guy is just a god. He is. He is the most amazing bass player in the world, I think. And Chad is probably America's most...
MTV: Most wanted?
DG: Most wanted. [Laughs] So it's been great. The tour's been wonderful. And I hope that it gets better than this.
MTV: Do you think you're going to play with them at all? Like, any collaborations? Maybe get up and do something together onstage?
DG: Well, I actually know a bass line to a Chili Peppers song, funny enough. I was telling Chad last night that I'd like to give it a try. Show Flea how it's done.
