Common Metal Detecting Terms

Cache - a sizeable concealed treasure, made up of money or other valuables.

CCW - abbreviation for Counterclockwise.

CW - abbreviation for Clockwise.

Coil - aka - the "Search Coil" - the round send & receive antenna attached to the very bottom of your metal detector. Bigger coils work better at finding deeply buried, larger items and smaller coils work better at finding small, shallow items.

Clad Coins - coins made up of lesser materials, minted from 1965 and to present.

(Desirable) Coins - coins made of at least 90% silver or copper, minted prior to 1965.

Dighole - a small hole left by someone, who lacked the courtesy to fill it in. These hurt our hobby.

Disc. - abbreviation for Discrimination. Discrimination enables a detector to reject certain metal objects considered to be junk. example - soda can pull tabs (A must have - Desirable option)

Frequency - is the rate at which an electrical current rises & falls (or is pulsed). Lower frequencies are best for cache or relic hunting. Higher frequencies are better at finding very small gold nuggets.

G.B. - abbreviation for ground balance. Ground Balance is achieved by adjusting your detector to a neutral state; to ignore the basic mineral make up of the ground beneath you. This allows your detector to pick out what is not natural - in the ground. Such as lost gold rings..etc. Some detectors have you do this manually, others do it automatically. Just starting out, automatically is a (Desirable option)

Ghost or Halo Effect - certain metals buried for long time, oxidize and leech into soil around them. This causes these items to appear bigger to your detector and give a louder response.

LCD - abbreviation for Liquid Crystal Display. Most modern detectors have this type of display (like on digital watches), which indicate either depth, probable target type or both, by use of small pointers (arrows), numerical or graphical display.. (Desirable Option)

Negative Response - when the tone of your detector reduces in volume over a target.

No Motion Mode - a mode of operation on quality detectors, which does not require the search coil to be moved, in order to detect a target. This mode makes pinpointing a target much easier. (Desirable option)

Positive Response - when the tone of your detector increases over a target.

Target - any item sensed by the detector and/or desired by the detectorist.

Target ID - abbreviation for Target Identification. An option on modern detectors that give the detectorist a indication of what is probably in the ground. (LCD Display) Not yet foolproof but -> (Desirable option)

T/R - stands for Transmit & Receive - a mode of operation used by older detectors or highly specialized detectors. Stay away from detectors of this type when just starting out.

VLF - stands for Very Low Frequency. The lower range of frequency used by most modern detectors. (Desirable option) - because it is very stable and easy to use.

"Wheatie" - pennies minted prior to 1959 with the wheat straw symbol on the reverse of the coin.
