Dyslexia

Little over a year ago we were told our youngest daughter,
Kaitlan, had severe dyslexia & ADD. The whole family had
to come to terms with this & learn just what it meant to her &
adjust a lot of our thinking to hers in order to learn ourselves
how to deal with this problem.

We have done a lot of reading, had long talks with her
doctors & her school, a lot of patience but above
all a lot of love.

You would be surprised at the number of people that have never
heard of dyslexia or know about it but don't know the problems
it can cause with someone you love.

Below I have described what dyslexia is & what causes it
in hopes it may help you to understand better.

There are a few brain disorders that causes difficulties in
speaking, writing or reading words. The general term apasia refers
to the anibility to form and speak words correctly. In a related
disturbance, called either agraphia or dysgrapia, the individual
may be able to read or speak correctly but be unable to write.

The disorder related to reading is called dyslexia.Dyslexia is
a language disorder in which a normal person with normal vision
has difficulty comprehending written launguage. Its main
characteristic is confusion in the orientation of the letters,
which is caused by the person reading in the wrong direction
across the page, the inability to precieve certain similarities
or differences in letters or words, and the inability to pronounce
unfamiliar words. The term is applied in schools when a child,
usually of average or higher intelligence, is 2 or more years
behind in the expected grade level in reading but has normal
or better achievement in other school subjects.Since perceptual
difficulties cannot be treated,a remedial education program
program is often designed to address the special needs of
the child. For example, reading aloud may be emphasized
over silent reading.Dyslexia is a perceptual disorder.
The reader is unable to precieve correctly what is on a page.
Letters and numbers often appear reversed:"b" seems to be "d",
tends to leave out letters or words or will insert words or
letters that are not there. They precieve in pictures.

Many dyslexics are left handed or they will be able to write
with either hand. They often confuse left from right. Some
researchers believe that latent dyslexia may be aggravated by
the way reading is taught. Some people today that are considered
to be illiterate may not be at all.A lot of them could be dyslexic
and never realize it.

Children with dyslexia are estimated to be as high as 15%
at the preschool age. The problem can be compounded by
failure by the parents or the taechers to reconize the condition.
This can easly lead to emotional problems. Especially a child that
cannot understand their failure to keep up with their classmates.
Dyslexia can be a very serious problem if not taken care of.
It can be controled with doctors help and patience, love and help
from the parents.

We have tried to give you a site where you can go into and
find out more about this problem if it is needed.
Our childern are our future and children with this problem
have a slim future ahead of them because of this disability.

Please feel free to contact me through e-mail and I will
gladly share any advise I can about the experience we have had
with our daughter in the hopes it can help other children
with dyslexia and ADD.
