Friends of old,

I have not seen most of you since our early college days so I will begin there. You may remember that I went to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. I completed a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) in choral music education in 1975. I earned the Master of Music (MM) degree in 1977 at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. I landed a teaching position at Newberry College, a small Lutheran liberal arts school in central South Carolina, where I remained until I retired from teaching in 1989. I also did doctoral work at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati during 1981-83 while on a sabbatical. At Newberry I taught voice, conducting, music education courses and directed two touring vocal groups: the concert choir and a small jazz/pop ensemble. The fall of 1989 saw a major shift in career directions (some might describe this as an early mid-life crisis) when I became a Realtor with Russell & Jeffcoat Realtors in Columbia, South Carolina. Today I am still associated with this firm. Additionally, I have also served various churches throughout my years as vocalist and/or musical director. I have been the Music Coordinator of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Columbia since 1983. I am single and without children. (You can't assume these sorts of things any more.) I do have three cats: Miss Goldberg, named for Whoopi --crazy and black; Slady, gray and female; and Casper, friendly (he adopted me) and having the appearance of the late Sammy who committed suicide in front of my car in my driveway. When I am not selling houses or making music, I am at work in my garden, which has become quite a labor of love. Others might call it an obsession. Nonetheless, it gives me great pleasure. It has been featured in several local magazines and The State, the Arkansas Democrat of South Carolina. I am scheduled for an up-coming issue of Southern Living Magazine in 2001. I'll have to keep you posted.

I have lived in central South Carolina all these years. At first I rented in Newberry, then I bought an old, decrepit house (which I completely renovated) in a quaint little town with the super name of Prosperity. Finally I had a home built on a two-acre tract in Irmo, a fast-growing suburb of Columbia. It is great here: close to Atlanta and Charlotte, an easy, quick drive to the Atlantic beach and the North Carolina mountains, and lots of people moving in needing lots of houses! If you know of someone moving here, be sure to call 1-800-245-PHIL.
