Heroin is one of the most addictive of all drugs, it is also one of the most dangerous. Overdose symptoms include respiratory problems to depression followed by coma than death. Overdose is much more likely when heroin is mixed with alcohol and other tranquilizers. Withdrawal occurs when a addict is without the drug very a certain amount of time, usually 24 hours. Effects of withdrawal are body aches, restlessness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and cold flashes with goose bumps aka “cold turkey.” These effects can last from days to months. The effects peak at 2-3 days than decrease from there, usually leaving in 7-10 days.
Heroin changes both neurochemical and molecular structures of the brain. This can lead to depression and addiction. Getting over a physical addiction to heroin is much easier than getting over a mental addiction. Physical addictions can go away in a few weeks. A mental addiction can last years.
