We are students at Trinity Junior High. Our school is located in a Benedictine monastery that is called Saint Scholastica. She is the patron saint of our school and surrounding monastery. Saint Scholastica and Saint Benedict were twins born in central Italy in 480. Scholastica's parents had wanted children for many years, so when Scholastica and Benedict were born their parents cherished them. The couple tried to raise them well. Scholastica was an intelligent, friendly girl. She was very religious and had promised herself to God at a young age. Benedict was a loving brother. When he realized that she and other women wanted to become nuns, he used his influence to help them start a monastery for women.

Once a year, Benedict would visit his sister. On one visit she begged him to stay longer. He was on his way out when a large storm arose. He stayed and they talked about the goodness of God and the happiness of the saints in heaven. Not long after that visit, Scholastica passed away. When she died in 547, her soul went to heaven in the form of a white dove.

Saint Scholastica was a model of love. By the way she loved and treated others, she became closer to God. We, too, can be learn to be a good example by our values and spiritual attitudes. Saint Scholastica and Saint Benedict believed in a strong education. Following their example means trying your hardest in school, even when things get difficult.

This is a prayer to Saint Scholastica:
Scholastica, Help us to lead a Christian life of good values and good examples. Help us lead others to God with the same faith and courage you did. Help us to do well in school and always try to improve.
Amen
