Everyone knows what it`s like to be sick. No one likes it! This is a story of a young girl who through her entire life was sick. She was cheerful through all her sufferings though. She is now a saint and is the patroness of the sick. Her name is St. Bernadette.

Bernadette was born on January 7,1844. She was the eldest child and her family lived in Lourdes. Her father ran a mill when Bernadette was young, but in 1855 the family was forced to leave. After trying several other places the family moved into an old abandoned prison which was owned by relatives.

Bernadette was always sick, especially with asthma, throughout her life. She worked very hard at home because she had little brothers and sisters. Bernadette loved God and so through all her sickness she honored him. On February 11,1858 something incrediable happened. As Bernadette was gathering firewood,Mary, the mother of God,appeared to her. Bernadette didn`t know who this beautiful lady was or what she wanted. Mary appeared to her 18 times and on March 25,1858 she appeared for the last time, saying, "I am the Immaculate Conception." Several years later Bernadette became a Sister of Never. She died April 16,1879 of tuberculosis in her knee.

In one of the visions of Mary instructed Bernadette to dig and a spring was found that spring still runs today. The water of the spring has cured many people.

So the next time you`re sick remember there is one saint you can pray to.
