METAL VISION web zine interviews LUNACY (RUSSIA)
By: V.K. (interview taken on September 15, 1999)

Crudelis:  Don't lay all our answers to heart ;). Take something seriously but something as a joke!

Metal Vision: Hello and Welcome. How are you today?
FESTER
:
Good. Thank you.

CRUDELIS: Hailzz! I'm fine... Thanxx
ANUBIS
:
We Sucks...Like Everything In Russia...

Metal Vision: Russia is a country full of problems and non resolved things. Does it affect your music in any way? Has Lunacy ever experienced any major or serious problems?
ANUBIS: I think...not...We never mind about what goes on around us... World In That we live & people with that we communicate have nothing same  with Russian reality ( how You know it ). We are very modest & poor students - it's the reason we have no problems.
CRUDELIS: The only problem of Lunacy is to be about to practise music ;)  ...We pass all our time with drinkin' beer & speculatin' about arn't we ever going  to play music... No more problems!

Metal Vision: Lunacy has released their latest album "When Death & Frost Unite". Are you satisfied with this release?
FESTER: Yes, it was interesting experience - but the next album will be a quite different, We have other ideas for music now... maybe only some elements will be the same.
ANUBIS: Maybe...There are some interesting songs on it, but I think, it was actual when we just  finished it...Now we have new ideas & many things from that album today I can do better. The new opus we're writing today will have some  elements the same with  "When Death & Frost..." but we're more & more leaving hard black metal sound to use more original ideas of our own.
CRUDELIS: maybe some opuses from this album & others will be altered in the next releases

Metal Vision: Lunacy isn't a new band. Lunacy already has 7 albums. What the band and as individuals, have you gained throughout the years? What has changed?
CRUDELIS: I turned into schizoid...and hence Lunacy has gained one more schizophrenic ;) ...heh, in fact, i broadened my mental outlook with Lunacy (namely with Anubis & Fester) ...I've acquired not only music inspiration for my personal project ( ODIUM (rus.) ) but also a couple of buddies!
FESTER: The attitude to creation of compositions has radically changed. Old albums have been recorded alive in very chaotic environmemt - and details in music depended on many people - from members of band to engineer. Now we show more accuracy in our (de)compositions. But I hope the main idea 'to have no limits' was not killed with powerful computing  devices we use now.
ANUBIS: Heh...from true & infantile metal band we became rave-black-pop-death-gothic act &  I think its good. Now we can use in our music ALL THAT WE WANT & there're no  stylistic borders for us. When we began we wanted to make something like  "metal music" - today we create our songs without thinking of the style & satanic idea - the main meaning for us have beauty & grace of our music.

Metal Vision: Lunacy is currently signed to a label named Coronach. Could you tell  me more about this label? The things that they do to help you? distributions? Do you get good promotion?
ANUBIS: Hehehe...It's our own label for promoting of all our projects & some more original bands, that can't sign on metal labels.
FESTER: :-) Cool Label... We have not any labels in Russia wishing to work with us, so  we've established our own label. Any original bands which wanna be signed to CORONACH RECORDS(http://start.at/coronach) are welcome.

Metal Vision: What is current metal situation in Russia? your opinion on today's Russian Metal? any bands you would like to mention?
FESTER: I think now there are new wave of metal bands, more intellectual, more musical...  without fuckin' 'Thrash,Vodka and ugar'; they are in underground yet, but they have a future... I mean such bands like ODIUM (rus.), FOREST STREAM, BUTCHERY, AEON and LUNACY of coRPse :-)))))
ANUBIS: The Majority of "Russian Metal Scene" is total fucken shit (yes! that's what I wanted to say so long) They are orienting to primitive & stupid music for teenagers.  Only good bands are some new & intelligent bands like MENTAL HOME, GORESLEEPS, FOREST STREAM & DECEPTIVE, maybe DEVOID...

>

Metal Vision: Today's Metal scene overall?
ANUBIS: Everyting is good, if You mean all world scene: bad bands & primitive black are downed (  I mean fucken Norway penguin warriors ). And good & interesting bands become more & more popular, not only in metal society (heh on MTV we can see DIMMUBORGERS & CRADLES - it's cool!)

Metal Vision:Lunacy's main influences? personal fav band's?
FESTER: My main influence now is FSOL and A.Schnitke, but favorite bands are Scorn,  Godflesh, old Carcass, Cathedral, Tiamat...and BACKSTREET BOYZ of coRPse!!!!!!!
ANUBIS: I like MARILYN MANSON, DORO PESCH, TYPE O NEGATIVE, MORBID ANGEL, CATHEDRAL, DEATH & HYPOCRISY, also CRADLES with FALKENBACH & DIMMUBORGERS...Main influence to my personality was Chuck Schuldiner - the most wonderful musician, composer & poet.
CRUDELIS: as 4 me I prefer EMPEROR, SATYRICON, DISMAL EUPHONY, MISANTHROPE, EDGE OF SANITY, DEATH, IN FLAMES, HYPOCRISY, COVENANT, MORGOTH, FEAR FACTORY, SINISTER, WUMPSCUT, ELEND ..heh.. in a nutshell death-doom-black-grind-gothic-industrial ... just go to my personal HP http://i.am/brutaal 4 detailz... but all these bands don't impede us to do our original stuff!

Metal Vision: When I listened to your music I heard a  lot of eastern melodies, do you have any special bands that influenced you on doing that? Do any of your band's members listen to Eastern music?
FESTER: i like eastern melodies... arabian, indian music... the sound and the formation.
ANUBIS: Yes! we all like eastern culture , eastern courtesy , art...hehehe we like MOSLEMGAUSE band & Uzbek folk music.
CRUDELIS: yeah.. bismiallahi-i-rahmani-i-rahim-a-bd-alla-el-alla-el-allah akbar!

Metal Vision: Lunacy seems to have very big variety of metal styles and of course music that is outside metal. How would you like to be labeled?
FESTER: I don't think it is so important.
ANUBIS: Heh...I never think our music needs labels - its our "Lunacy Style", but it can be called black-pop-industrial-death-technorave-cybergothic metal hehe

Metal Vision: Once Metal genre was for extremists, crazy people and people who had twisted thoughts and views about the world. Metal was kept underground especially Black Metal, but nowadays everything went different direction and changed a lot of people started listening to metal and it all became trend. What do you think happened? How did it reflect your music, or thoughts about metal scene overall?
CRUDELIS: I don't care about it... just I listen what I like & do what I wanna do in music. I'm not extremist or somethin' , but this doesn't impede me to be the metalhead...ya know, real extremists blast houses & synagogues off ....either they so stupid that can't understand that these buildings will be rebuilt again anyway and additionally using my & their money as taxes or they wanna make me bankrut... that suxx anyway! and these assholes have nothing common with Metal music & culture ...yeah, maybe I'm crazy, but who isn't? All is relative!
FESTER: There is no real extremism in metal scene. The best example of pure extremism - is  Napalm Death'88 or Scorn 'Gyral' - but I don't know now any band with such extremism  (I mean the idea, but not the bands playing like ND or Scorn )
ANUBIS: Metal culture is not extrimal & destructive. Culture means act of creation - not  destruction. All intelligent & progressive people understand it. Destructivism is the part only of most stupid & untalent bands. Marilyn Manson &  Cradle Of Filth NEVER created aesthetic music - all they make is harmonic & beautiful - uncultural extrimism is field of stupid penguin black warriors & ancient monsters like SLAYER & WASP.

Metal Vision: Metal is still staying a litlle bit as an outcast to society. Do you see yourself as an outcast to this society, or any Lunacy members?
CRUDELIS: it's impossible to live in society & to be out of it... yeah, maybe I think & behave in other way than some persons  of our society (hehe...I don't go to the church 4 example), but I live with the same laws, I go to the institute, shops & stuff... I associate not only with metalers... what the fuck! Why should I restrict myself within any limits?!!
FESTER: No, our music is outcast to society, music is our emotions, our thoughts, but our bodies are laying in the morgue called society (waiting for solemn funeral). We are everywhere, everytime... Look at the sky - stars escape from us, they afraid us...
ANUBIS: If someone not like it - we never forced them to listen, i live in separated metal society and communicate only with people that are like me. The majority of metalheads that are my friends, are students of some institutes or scientists or art people - we have nothing common with punk shit & durty assholes.

Metal Vision: I've heard a lot about this market called Gorbushka. Could you please tell me more about it?
ANUBIS: A big big bedlam where gather all Russian metalheads wanting to buy or sell something- I think there are the cheapest CDs in Europe!! :)

Metal Vision: Is it expensive living in Russia right now? Do you earn any money from the band?
FESTER: It depends on you, if you want to be a begger - you become it in any country- Russia, Canada, Africa... We have not earned any money from the band yet, this is not our aim.
ANUBIS: We have no problems. We are not only modest students - we all have some business - it gives some money for our modest life ( Have some $ to bye some new CDs or car ;) ).

Metal Vision: How do you mix music and lyrics together? Are lyrics important as the music itself for you?
FESTER: Both music and lyrix are important together and each itself. Mixdown of two kinds of emotion expressions gives a new formation, with unexpected sense.
ANUBIS: When I write lyrics - sometimes I have no music for it, but when I hear new Fester's music I realy know how to use my lyrics there.

Metal Vision: Hobbies other than music?
FESTER Pathalogoastronomy =)
ANUBIS: rotting cars, traditional scandinavian culture & history, ancient Eastern poetry, Beer, Whiskey, computers, cellular phones, women & "popular &  extrimal lifestyle".
CRUDELIS: loafing around I-net & webmastering (http://welcome.to/lunacy)...and the main hobbie is to grant an interview ;))

Metal Vision :Alcohol, Drugs and Yorsh (which is alcohol too) ?
FESTER: ambient noise & some beer - better way to leave our universe and to go to uncle Zzooouhh
ANUBIS: Yes! Ok! I drink much beer every day & whiskey every evening - It's necessary like an air.
CRUDELIS: Pivo

Metal Vision:What is Lunacy's view on religion? Any of you think's there is higher power (God)?
FESTER: Maybe there is some power... I know some really unexplainable events. But it is impossible this power is Krishna, Yahve or Odin... as they shown in  Koran, Bible, Upanishadi, Nomicon. We called such power as uncle Zzooouhh :-) The name is NOT important. The existence or unexistence of such power(or weakness &-)) is very funny, but not so important. I don't care of.
CRUDELIS: I guess I'm  close to atheism... I believe in myself... I can live 'WITHOUT GOD' ..heh.. and god can live without me if he (or it) is, i'm sure! ;)  It doesn't matter 4 me is any god or not! Let's philosophers busy themselfs with that crap! I have more interesting & useful job...
ANUBIS: I dont sure - I think I'm pagan (I like pagan philosophy & way of life) but  deep inside me I understand that I cannot give anyone be higher then me & I know - there will be no life after death! I'm black god.

Metal Vision: What is your opinion about the following bands:

1) Nokturnal Mortum:
ANUBIS: cool & original - interesting music
CRUDELIS: cool Ukraine band indeed! ..but it seems they lost their singularity...  I mean they played somethin' interesting on the early albums (especially on 'Goat Horns'), but the last album reminds me ordinary black metal ...yeah  they'll obtain more new fans with this release, but as 4 me & many others  old metalheads we'd better listen to EMPEROR!

2) Satarial:
ANUBIS: It realy sucks forever - stupid lyrics for fools & primitive music - I hate them!
CRUDELIS: ordinary sympho-black, but lyrix suxx - childish prattle! it'd be better  if they'll sing in any exotic language  (e.g. Swahili or Middle French or somethin') ;)) , coz when the same they sing  in russian, adults can't listen to it!!

3) Temnozor:
ANUBIS: Ups...You know them...(?) Not bad, but not original too.

4) Rossomahaar:
 LUNACY: we dunno it.

5) Nighthatred:
 LUNACY: we dunno.

Metal Vision: Do you see any connection between them (except for that they are all Russians) ?
CRUDELIS: NM are not russians... ;(
A
NUBIS
: All them are under the press of traditional Russian metal with vodka, ugar & stupid primitivism.

Metal Vision: Nordic Black Metal. Any influences from those guys?
FESTER: Maybe, Dark Throne and Burzum... but only when they were original.
ANUBIS: True & Evil sucks - others...I like last BURZUMS albums, LIMBONIC ART, DISSECTION, DIMMUBORGERS & other "POZER" bands - they make many beautiful & interesting things.

Metal Vision: A lot of bands from Russia have political, racist and nationalistic view on certain things. Does Lunacy has anything to do with those three things?
FESTER: It is not interesting. And what about racism and nationalism - it's stupid.
ANUBIS: NATIONALIZM SUCKS ! I hate this shit! All people of all nations are the same!  I see no reason to hate someone only for his hationality.  Nationalism is a form of Holy Christianity - Hate to other nations is a part of  Judo-Christian Ideology. Nationalism is for people with no mind & no work.
CRUDELIS: Yeah, all mischiefs are becouse of christianity!  There're two things that I hate... it's racism... and Negros ;))  heh...in fact, I'm not in politics, racism or something.... I'm too lazy %-)  ...ofcoRPse all our life is politics, but I mean i'm not in world one... I dont wanna be president ;) ya c? Racism & nationalizm really suxx... I'm sure there're  lots of bastards, assholes and talents in every nationality or(and) confession.... Imbecility haz no  sex & nationality!

Metal Vision: Thank you very much for this interview, any last words you would like to say to Metal Vision readers, Lunacy fans and Canadian Metal fans (scene)?
FESTER: Do like you want to do and you will be live eternally... like  eternal hebrew (vechniy zhid) Thank you too.
ANUBIS: I wish to You more freedom in Your art activity & more success in Your dark life.
CRUDELIS: listen to LUNACY!!! AVE SINGULARITY!!!  and thanxx 4 endurance ...of couRPse ya disagree with some of (or all) our opinions but anyway thanxx 4 reading to the end! ;)
