He became a start doing art for Major Comics with Major Max. Inspired by the superheroes he drew, he became the costumed hero Yellowjacket. He busted street crime, but was also a political activist, sick of government hypocrisy and a broken system. In 1974 he returned from a long night of crime fighting, and startled his son, who thought he was an intruder. His son shot him in the head, and only realized who the Yellowjacket was when he removed his mask. Young Harley went into mourning for years until he was inspired to create peace in America by introducing real live superheroes to America.

Yellowjacket was published by E. Levy/Frank Comunal, which later became Charlton Comics. When DC obtained the rights to Charlton comics and its characters  in 1983 Yellowjacket was not included in the deal because he'd lapsed into the public domain. When Grant Morrison revamped the Charlton Comics characters in 2015 he introduced Yellowjacket into the DC Universe.
