Juan was killed in the ensuing conflict, and his brother Vicente de Zaldívar came to the New World to avenge his brother. He held a kangaroo court that put the Acoma women into bondage, and the men in the same situation after he cut one foot off each man. The crown objected to Vicente's activities, but he was undeterred. He endlessly tormented the Acoma, murdering, raping and performing cannibalism on them. In death he became a demon, and claimed the souls of the Acoma as his own. During the era of the Wild West he clashed with El Diablo Lazarus Lane, but bested him. Lane's successor was driven by the curse of El Diablo to fight Zaldivar. The new El Diablo bested him, and promised to release him if he freed the souls of the Acoma people. Zaldivar complied, and Diablo blasted him with his hellish guns. Lazarus told him the cruel way he was going about things was not the way of El Diablo, and Diablo asked him why Zaldivar claimed the Diablo's served someone named Chutriel.
