The more substances Sponge-Man absorbs, the larger and stronger he becomes. There is no known limit to the amount of substances Sponge-Man can absorb into his body, but he can also release any substance he has absorbed back to its' original source.History: (Challengers of the Unknown vol. 1 #47)-Miklos was a deep-sea sponge-diver who came upon a strange meteorite with a sponge growing on it. Accidentally cutting himself on the meteorite, he soon found himself imbued with its' energies, and became a Sponge-Man. He sought the help of the Challengers of the Unknown to cure his condition, and they promised to find a cure. Unfortunately his next-door neighbor, a former con named Stacy, was eavesdropping and dreamed up a scheme to manipulate him. Stacy concocted a story about a foreign doctor who could cure him, but saying the treatment would cost a small fortune. Although reluctant to the suggestion, Sponge-Man consented to help Stacy rob an armored truck, and later steal a Rembrandt being transported on a cargo ship. The Challengers confronted Sponge-Man and presented him with Stacy's rap sheet. Angry at being used, and feeling full of despair, he began wandering the countryside in a daze, absorbing everything in his path and growing to colossal proportions. He snapped out of it when he witnessed a forest fire endangering the lives of small children, and released enough water to put out the blaze. The Challengers again offered their help to him, but Sponge-Man decided he no longer had a place in human society. Sponge-Man dove to the bottom of the sea, sat on a rock, and prepared himself for a lifetime of solitude.
(Challengers of the Unknown vol. 1 #51)-Sponge-Man was enjoying his undersea life, sitting on his rock and becoming friends with the local fish population while almost completely forgetting his former life as a normal human. His world was torn asunder when government contractors set off undersea detonations to clear land for an underwater military complex. Infuriated by the death of his fishy friends he rampaged, and when the Sea Devils arrived on the scene he thrashed them. The Challengers were put on the case and succeeded in imprisoning Sponge-Man, but the evil Scorpio organization had a vested interest in the Sponge continuing his undersea destruction. Scorpio agents freed Sponge-Man and sent a poison gas bomb after the Challengers. Sponge-Man again had a glimmer of morality surface in his mind, and he absorbed the deadly gas into his own system. Sponge-Man sacrificed his life to save the Challengers, and will be fondly remembered. Maybe for a few minutes anyway.
