History: (Batman: Gotham Knights #4 (fb)) - Sam was a Batman fan that naively believed the hero would never let anyone in Gotham City get hurt or killed. Sam's parents were involved in a car accident, and although they came out of it unharmed Sam was instantly killed. His spirit stayed on Earth because it was restless and demanded to know why his hero Batman wasn't able to save his life.

(Batman: Gotham Knights #3, 4) - Sam possessed the bodies of recently dead murder victims in Gotham and followed and attacked Batman. He screamed accusations at Batman, asking where he was when his life needed saving, leaving Batman puzzled. Once Batman learned his name he did some research and found out exactly what happened to Sam. Batman nicknamed him Samsara, after the Hindu concept that life was followed by a series of reincarnations in new bodies. Sam saw his mother o the very street corner where he had been killed, she was still in deep mourning. Sam possessed a corpse and ran towards his mom, eager to embrace her. She was startled enough to run into traffic, and was nearly run over before Batman saved her. Batman explained to Sam that he saved everyone he possibly could, and that as much as Sam wanted to be alive and with his parents again it was time for him to move on. Sam said he was tired, and going to bed. With that he vanished.

(Batman: Gotham Knights #16) - Sam came to accept his death. He came to Batman in a dream and warned him that Matatoa, a ma who should be dead, was coming for him.
