(Loveless #1) - After the end of the Civil War Wes Cutter and his beloved wife Ruth rode back to their home in Blackwater. Ruth staid in the shadows while Wes greeted a bunch of men from Blackwater shocked that Wes wasn’t dead, saying his brother Jonny assured him he’d died in prison. They complained about their homes being taken over by the North during reconstruction, and told Wes his home was gone. They advised him to keep moving, saying Blackwater had nothing left for him, and that his wife was no longer there, but they refused to say why she left. Wes said he was respectfully disregarding their advice, but the men put their hands on their holsters, again telling him to move on. Wes got the drop on them, shooting them down. In town Wes and Ruth saw the body of young Johnson, who’d been shot by soldiers led by Col. Redd looking for his brother Boyd, who’d been sniping soldiers enforcing Reconstruction. Wes announced his return in a saloon, and no one seemed to want him back in town. Wes and Ruth arrived at their homestead, with Wes cursing the war, saying he hated the North and the South, white and black, he’d come to hate every living person except her. The only thing he cared about was reclaiming his land. He goaded the soldiers on his land into a fight, and ran them off at gunpoint. Ruth and Wes then made love on their front yard.
