Mary died, and Judson was crippled for years. When he recovered he vowed revenge and took up the costumed identity of the Reaper. The Reaper mercilessly stalked and slaughtered criminals, resulting in Gotham City having one of the lowest crime rates in the country. Months later Gotham’s protector of the 1940’s, Green Lantern I decided to come out of retirement to confront the Reaper. The ensuing fight left Green Lantern in the hospital, and the Reaper being pursued by the Justice Society. At this point he considered his work done; he retired and emigrated to Europe.
(Detective Comics #575-578)-In his absence crime had skyrocketed, and he decided the time had come for the Reaper to return. Shortly after his return he attracted the attention of Gothams’ new protector, Batman II. Their first fight left Batman beaten half to death. Batman made a desperate alliance with Gotham’s underworld, but the Reaper still proved to be elusive. In a final showdown, the Reaper determined that Batman was fit to be his replacement, so he jumped from a building to his death.
