Early versions of the ray could not force a person to go against their moral principles, but later versions could control any but the most strong-willed of individuals.History: (Green Lantern vol. 2 #1)-Jordan Weir was a scientist who turned his talents toward crime, using a hypno-ray to control criminals and have them pull robberies on his behalf as the Puppet-Master. Puppet-Master started a crimewave in Coast City which was disrupted by Green Lantern II. He sent an army of mechanical puppets to kill Green Lantern, and when this failed he turned his hypno-ray against Green Lantern. Lantern shrugged off the ray and sent Puppet-Master to prison.
(Justice League of America I #5) - Getaway Master helped his criminal compatriots Captain Cold, King Clock, Professor Menace, Electric Man and Puppet Master escape prison using a shrink ray. After shrinking his crew they escaped prison on a matchbook tied to a helium balloon. They planned to destroy the Justice League of America, and issued a challenge to the heroes. Professor Menace built robots of himself King Clock and Captain Cold that were rigged to explode after being touched and fought Green Arrow, Flash and Wonder Woman of the JLofA. The heroes escaped Clock's quicksand clock trap, but as the heroes approached Arrow realized they were robots and detonated them with arrows from a distance. Getaway Master, Electric Man and Puppet Master attacked Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern with deadly weather attacks, but failed to kill the heroes. The heroes approached the Master's ship, which was protected by an explosive force field, but Green Arrow activated the field from a distance to save his teammates. The League thought Green Arrow was a traitor, but he exonerated himself by explaining the villains traps and capturing the lot of them.
(Teen Titans vol. 1 #8, 9)-After an early release from prison Puppet-Master was hired by Steve Dayton (Mento) of Dayton Industries. H.I.V.E. lured him back to crime, hiring him to steal the formula for Promethium, an energy source at Dayton Industries. Now calling himself the Puppeteer he used puppets to kill four board members of Dayton Industries. Confronted by the New Teen Titans, he fled, which embittered H.I.V.E. against him. H.I.V.E. attempted to have Puppeteer killed, but he managed to evade his hunters. Recently the Wildebeest Society has forced Puppeteer to work for them.
