History: (Batman and the Outsiders #14, 15)-Proteus’ origins are unknown, but he was probably given his power by the Monitor, who named him after the shape-shifter of myth. Proteus always despised his homely appearance, and his first use of his powers was to make himself handsome. Proteus was a member of the New Olympians, henchmen of the Monitor lent out to madman Maxie Zeus in order to kidnap Olympic athlete Lacinia Nitocris. The New Olympians were opposed by the Outsiders, and the two teams faced off in Olympic games to determine a victor. Proteus and his partner Vulcanus were pitted against Black Lightning and Metamorpho in a deadly version of soccer. They were defeated, and after being shocked by Black Lightning, Proteus’ appearance reverted to his old, ugly self. He was in despair, and begged to be killed, but the heroes naturally refused.
