(Action Comics I #11) - Pep was visiting a captain friend when he was shanghaied by sailor's from Captain Sindra's tramp freighter. Pep was put to backbreaking work on the journey to the small South American republic of Latara. During a storm his fellow shanghaied worker Jensen fell overboard, breaking his leg, but Pep rescued him. Sindra complained about having to feed someone who was useless to him, and said he wished he'd drowned. Pep was furious and decked the captain, landing himself in the brig. He escaped and found their store of guns destined for rebels in Latara. The captain and his crew found him out, but he dove overboard, avoided sharks, and swam to Latara, where he alerted the authorities. Pep and the police apprehended Sindra, and seized the weapons, saving the country from bloodshed.

(Action Comics I #16) - Mr. Smith told Pep that he'd received letters threatening his daughter Miss Mary, and hired Pep to be her bodyguard. He introduced Pep as a guest, so she wouldn't worry, and said the three of them would go on a cruise the next day. The butler Antone overheard, and called up his associates Slug and Slim, who aimed to kidnap Mary, murder her, and collect a ransom anyway. While Pep and the Smiths slept Antone let the fiends into the house, and Slug chloroformed Mary. Pep recognized the smell, and after dispatching Antone, who'd pulled a knife on him, he jumped on the back of the kidnappers car. They drove to a graveyard, where they'd bought a plot to bury Mary, but Pep made short work of the villains. With the threat to Mary's life quashed, Pep and the Smiths enjoyed their cruise.
