The boy grew up viewing himself and his family as freaks on display, and ran away at age sixteen. He had a hard time earning a paycheck, and the circus was in his blood, so he capitulated, and started touring as Tom Thumb III. He fell in love with fellow little person Vera Little, and the circus wanted them to get married as a publicity stunt. Thumb agreed, because his love was true, but he was disturbed by how interested Vera was in starting a family. Thumb didn’t want any children born like him, so he ran off. On the road he met performer Mr. Miracle, who allowed him to assist with a dangerous stunt that was his last of the year. Thumb performed admirably, and Miracle told him he had work for him whenever he needed it. Thumb couldn’t stay away from Vera, and after a reunion she was soon with child. Thumb was disgusted, and soon ran away, taking a job with Miracle. He rechristened himself Oberon, and created a character he could live with. Oberon sent Vera child support money every month, but begged her never to contact him. Vera followed his instructions out of blind love, never even telling him that their daughter Christine was born of average height.
(Mister Miracle #1) - For years Oberon served as the loyal assistant to escape artist Mr. Miracle Thaddeus Brown. As Thaddeus got older Oberon worried one of his escapes would kill him. Miracle made a bet long ago with Intergang chief Steel Hand that he couldn't devise an inescapable trap. Miracle needed money for a new tour, and was ready for Steel hand's "Big Trap," but Steel Hand was afraid of losing the bet and losing face, so he wanted Miracle dead. Oberon and Miracle met Scott Free, a New God, and he helped them stave off Intergang. While Miracle was practicing for the "Big Trap" an Intergang sniper killed him, and Oberon mourned him. Scott Free dressed up as Mr. Miracle and brought Steel hand to justice. Oberon was pleased and agreed to be Scott Free's assistant.
(Mister Miracle I #2) - Oberon helped Miracle practice new escape artists tricks, including being straightjacketed and teetering on unstable objects above a vat of explosives. To aid his efforts he built a Follower, a New Genesis robotic duplicate of Miracle that mirrored his movements. Granny Goodness wanted to kill Miracle for escaping her orphanage, so she sent her soldiers to capture him, but they ended up with Oberon and the Follower instead. Miracle followed them to Granny's lair, but was captured, and he and Oberon were thrown in the X-Pit, a torture device created by Overlord, a gift given to Granny. After going through several torment cycles Miracle attached his Mother Box to the X-Pit, which was linked with Overlord, and the resulting feedback killed overlord. Granny was distraught that her gift was gone, and Miracle warned her to leave him be.
(DC Comics Presents #12) - Big Barda and Oberon congratulated Mr. Miracle after he performed live for the UBC Network, being suspended from a helicopter inside a steel coffin, and still managing to evade two fighter drones. They were both momentarily worried about him, especially Oberon. Lola Barnett was covering his stunt, and was thrilled, but admitted that the ratings share would be small because Galaxy Broadcasting was airing a Superman documentary. Mr. Miracle was irritated that Superman exceeded him popularity, and flew off to think. His jealousy ended when he helped the Man of Steel apprehend Intergang mobsters.
(Green Lantern III #1) - Green Lantern visited Oberon and the Justice League and they offered him a spot on the team, despite Guy Gardner's objections. Lantern turned them down, telling them he was trying to get away from superheroics and reconnect with his human side.
(Jack Kirby’s Fourth World #12) - Oberon related the story of his daughter’s birth, and how he abandoned his wife because he feared his daughter would be a little person. Shilo and Brown were shocked, and Oberon asked Christine where they’d take their relationship. She told him they didn’t have a relationship, she just wanted to see what kind of man could abandon his family like he did. She left, and handed over copies of her mother’s journal to him, so he could see she loved him until the day he duied. Oberon asked why she never let him know that his daughter was born normal. Christine said it was probably because he asked her not to contact him. She also speculated that, even though it was against her mother’s nature, she’d kept it a secret to spite Oberon.
(Jack Kirby’s Fourth World #10) - Oberon returned to Mister Miracle Shilo’s act, and told him the place had gone to ruins without him, inspecting a cable, and deeming it insufficient. Shilo and Ted were glad to have him back, but wanted him to meet their new friend Christine Little, who claimed to be his daughter. He initially denied it, saying there were enough freaks in the world without him having kids, but when he met Christine he fainted.
(JLA #38) - Oberon was among the legion of heroes summoned by the JLA to quell worldwide outbreaks of warfare that were incited by Mageddon.
(Identity Crisis #1) - Oberon was among the number of heroes who attended Sue Dibny’s funeral.
(Doom Patrol V #7-9) - Oberon started a meta human moving business with his associates Furley, Joe and Harry. They got a job cleaning out Dayton Manor, which held many trophies of the Doom Patrol’s adventures. Oberon’s staff was especially concerned by the Painting That Ate Paris. They discovered a free-standing portal that led to Danny The Street, and packed it up. Upon delivering the goods to the Doom Patrol’s new headquarters on Oolong Island, the MSE, despotic pan-dimensional construction workers, broke out of the Danny portal, and claimed Earth for their own. The Doom Patrol opposed the MSE, and forced them away from Earth. Oberon and his staff couldn’t wait to get away from Oolong and the Doom Patrol.
