History(DC Comics Presents #27 (fb)) - Mongul ruled his world as a tyrant, and subjugated his people. He thought the only way to use power was to dominate others. Mongul’s reign was interrupted by the holy man Arkymandryte, who whipped the people into a religious fervor and convinced them to rebel. Mongul fled his planet, and vowed to dominate the entire universe.

(DC Comics Presents #27, 28) -Star-spanning world conqueror Mongol wanted control of the legendary Warworld, a planet-sized doomsday weapon, to continue his conquests. The crystal key that would unlock it was on New Mars, and he tried to wrest it from Martian Manhunter but failed. His next plan involved recruiting Superman to get past Martian Manhunter, so he shrunk Superman’s friends Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Steve Lombard, and imprisoned them in a cube. He contacted Superman, and ordered him to retrieve the key, or his friends lives would be forfeit. Superman knew Mongul was up to no good, but decided to play along until he could rescue his friends. He traveled to new Mars, and despite Manhunter’s pleas that he didn’t know what Mongul was capable of he defeated the hero and took the key from its hidden crypt. Mongul arrived on New Mars, and when Superman refused him the key he prepared to kill Superman’s friends, but they were saved by Manhunter. Mongul snatched the key and flew away in his spacecraft. Superman, feeling responsible, vowed to track him down. Superman recruited Supergirl to go after Mongul, who’d already activated Warworld, and was commanding it using the central command control helmet. Warworld’s weaponry injured the heroes, and they realized it might be too powerful for them to deal with. Superman deduced that the more weapons were used, the more the control helmet put a strain on Mongul’s mind, so they forced him to keep throwing missiles at them until Mongul’s mind burnt out. Warworld continued to function on auto-pilot, so Supergirl flew at the speed of light and punched a hole through its command center. Superman entered Warworld to find Mongul vanished, and reprogrammed Warworld’s computers, causing it to self-destruct.

(DC Comics Presents #36) - Mongul set his sights on throne world and its empire of planets. throne world used a doomsday device to keep the empire in line, and Mongul wanted it to strike back at his homeworld, and conquer the universe. He killed the ruler Lady Clyrssa, and kidnapped Lady Merriah, the beloved of Starman, the next in line for the imperial crown. Starman pursued him, and Mongul told him he’d been a dead man walking since Mongul laid his eyes on Throneworld. He defeated Starman, shrunk him, and put him in a prisoner box off-planet. He returned to Throneeworld, and made himself the legitimate ruler, with Merriah promised as his consort so she could keep Mongul from executing her beloved. Superman rescued Starman, and demanded he destroy the doomsday weapon while Superman kept Mongul distracted before he could use it to destroy planets. Superman and Mongul had an epic battle, and Superman was once again shocked to find someone whose physical attributes matched his own. Mongul laid Superman out, but when he attempted to activate the doomsday weapon he realized Starman had already destroyed it. He turned tail and fled, leaving Starman in charge of Throneworld, and claiming that he could destroy them, but they were simply wasting his valuable time.

Mongul destroyed Coast City and built a massive engine on top of its remains.

(Superman: The Man of Steel #25) - Cyborg Superman and Mongul were targeting Metropolis as the next city they'd destroy to create a new Engine City. Superboy escaped his bonds, and left Engine City for Metropolis to expose Cyborg as a villain. Cyborg sent out a broadcast claiming the Last Son of Krypton had brainwashed Superboy, and that he was now a villain under his control.

(Superman: The Man of Steel #26) - Superman and Steel made their way deep into Engine City when they met Mongul, who explained that building Engine Cities would have led to Earth becoming his new Warworld, but when Superboy saved Metropolis from destruction and conversion into an Engine City his plan was foiled. In revenge he activated Engine City so it would blast Earth out of orbit. Steel fended off Cyborg and kept Earth from going off orbit, but Mongul battered Superman. Supergirl arrived, but Mongul defeated her, and was ready to kill Superman.

(Green Lantern II #46) - Mongul was about to kill Superman when Green Lantern Hal Jordan broke into his engine and attacked him. Mongul taunted Hal about the destruction of Coast City and the death of its' citizens, but Hal managed to defeat him after an intense battle.

(Green Lantern III #51, 52) - Mongul was taken to the Slab, but he immediately killed his guards, freed the Slab's superhuman prisoners and broke out, vowing to kill Green Lantern for defeating him. He found the new Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, and mistaking him for Hal Jordan he savagely attacked him.
