Powers: Kanto was a skilled strategist and combatant, and an unrivaled assassin. He was a master of armed combat, from sword fighting to using the advanced technology of Apokolips. Like all New Gods he was extraordinarily long-lived.History: (Jack Kirby’s Fourth World #9 (fb)) - Iluthin was a New God, and a student at Granny Goodness’ Orphenage, where lowly Apokoliptians were transformed into soldiers of Darkseid. Iluthin had a rough training, and turned to thievery, stealing from his fellow students, the Apokoliptian armory, and finally from Darkseid’s head assasin Kanto 13. He was caught by Segeant Skragg, and brought before Granny, and even though she promoted treachery, she was ashamed that he’d allowed himself to get caught in the act. She reminded him that only the strong survived on Apokolips, and had him run a gauntlet of his fellow students as punishment. He made it to the end with his extraordinary agility and fighting prowess, injuring his classmates along the way, but Kanto 13 was at the end, and started beating him to a pulp. Darkseid, impressed with Iluthin’s potential, interrupted. He used his omega-beams on him for a total wipeout, and told him that if he survived his destiny would be altered. Kanto guessed the boy survived, teleported instead of disintegrated, and vowed to track him down.
(Jack Kirby’s Fourth World #10 (fb), 11 (fb), 13 (fb)) - <1502> Italy, Iluthin found a place in the court of Cesare Borgia and his sister Lucretia, impressing them with his flair for nobility, and excellent swordsmanship. He began a romance with Borgia’s illegitimate sister Claudia, and that would not stand for Borgia. Iluthin was a commoner, so he had to be taken care of. Borgia gave Iluthin a message to transport across the land, claiming to need information on his enemy Duke Orsini. Iluthin knew it was a trap, but he kissed Claudia goodbye and reminded her that he was bound to his master. Iluthin was captured by the Orsinis and tortured, but refused to talk. Iluthin stayed on the rack until Orsini revealed his plans to attack Borgia’s unprotected forces. Iluthin easily escaped when he was alone, and reported back to Borgia, who was shocked by his survival. Some questioned Iluthin’s intel, but Borgia was confident that he was too savy in politics, and too in love with Claudia, for a plan of betrayal. After Borgia defeated Orsini’s forces, he rewarded Iluthin by allowing him to marry Claudia. On their wedding day, a Boom Tube opened up and discharged Kanto 13, who’d been stalking Iluthin, and couldn’t bear his survival. Kanto found that Iluthin outfought him at every turn, so he set a time bomb, and escaped via the Tube. Claudia threw herself on the bomb, sacrificing herself for her love, and Iluthin screamed and cradled her dead body. Iluthin was broken, and no longer cared about his place in court life. He followed Kanto to Apokolips using a Boom Tube, and engaged him in battle. Kanto soon doubled over in pain, and Iluthin revealed that he’d poisoned his water before he made his presence known. He chided Kanto, telling him that Claudia was the face of innocence, and her death would haunt Iluthin forever. Darkseid appeared, and when Kanto begged for help Darkseid slew him with the omega beams. Darkseid told Iluthin that Borgia taught him well, and he finally realized that their was no honor for an assassin, only success. Darkseid granted him the traditional name of Kanto, making him his new personal assassin, and granted the dead Kanto 13’s fief and fortress to him.
Kanto was fascinated by his tim,e during the Italian renaissance because of it's complex political intrigues. He created a costume that was a stylized version of Renaissance fashions, and involved himself in the political intrigues of Apokolips every chance he got.
(Martian Manhunter II #33, 34) - Martian Ma’Alefa’Ak opened communication with Apokolips and Darkseid became interested in the Life Equations of Ma’Alefa’Ak’s father M’Yrinn. Kanto and other New Gods were sent to Mars to lull the Martians into a false sense of security. Kanto made friends with manhunter J’Onn J’Onzz, who he felt a kinship to. Glorious Godfrey explored the idea of an Anti-Life Equation with M’Yrinn and soon after Parademons raided Mars and kidnapped M’Yrinn. J’Onn came to Apokolips to save his kin and asked Kanto for help. Kanto imprisoned an tortured him, reminding him that even if they were friends his loyalty to Darkseid trumped friendship. J’Onn escaped and spent years styming Darkseid’s search for the Anti-Life Equation. Kanto was put in charge of capturing J’Onn, but J’Onn always managed to elude him.
Kanto was sent to earth to kill Mister Miracle, but although he had ample opportunity he couldn't bring himself to end Miracle's life because he respected Miracle's talents as an escape artist.
(Jack Kirby’s Fourth World #3) - Darkseid roared with laughter when he saw the sun rise on Apokolips for the first time after Highfather had fused Apokolips and New Genesis into one world, and confided in Kanto and Granny Goodness that he always had a good sense of humor about the cosmos, and was honored that Highfather was going through such effort to distract him, but he wouldn’t be foiled. Kanto was pleased, since he too had long had a wry sense of seeing the world. He assembled an armada of spaceships from all the worlds and pantheons of gods he’d conquered, and aimed them at Earth.
(Superboy and the Ravers #14) -
(Jack Kirby’s Fourth World #9) - With Apokolips and New Genesis separated, and with Darkseid lost to the Promethean Galaxy, the Elite gathered to discuss business. Granny was raging about the fate of Apokolips, and Virman produced field reports that said the firepits overflowed, leaving most of the planet uninhabitable. In addition he noted the massive loss of civilian lives and surface structure damage. Desaad was not impressed, noting that, as always Virman focused on the details and failed to appreciate the big picture. Desaad feared that without Darkseid all of Apokolips would plunge into civil war. Kanto warned him that previous experience showed the folly of tring to take Darkseid’s mantle when he was gone, and insinuated that he could assassinate Desaad. For once Desaad showed backbone, warning Kanton that the Parademons were loyal to him in Darkseid’s absence. Granny broke them up, and told them to focus on their master Darkseid, and finding a way to free him from the Source Wall.
(Darkseid #1) -
(Jack Kirby’s Fourth World #18) - Kalibak siphoned Darkseid’s energy from the Source Wall, and used his newfound power to engage in final combat with Orion. Orion was defeated after a battle that shook Apokolips, and Kalibak planned on draining the rest of his father’s energy before confronting him in combat. Darkseid’s Elite of Granny, Kanto, Desaad, and Virmin were furious, both for the waste laid on Apokolips, and his terminity of challenging his father. They screamed at him via tele-screen until Tigra appeared, spreading her lies that Kalibak was the one true son of Darkseid, and it was his destiny alone to confront his father, not Orion’s.
(Jack Kirby’s Fourth World #19) - On Apokalips Desaad gave Darkseid a battle report of the forces Kalibak raised against him. Darkseid was somewhat confused about Kalibak demanding final battle, and Desaad reminded him of Tigra’s lies that Orion was not his son. Darkseid, completely out of character, apologized, and admitted that he was unfocused after his time in the Source Wall. Desaad was worried about his master’s state of mind, and shared his knowledge with Darkseid’s Elite Vundabar, Kanto and Granny Goodness. They bickered, and Virman tried to play both sides Kanto physically subjugated him, and told him his only use was as a paperweight. Tigra appeared, and told the Elite the time had come to take power from Darkseid, and if his weakness was known his own supporters would be on their side. Virman Vundabar schemed to assassinate Darkseid in his weakened state. He pointed a crossbow at his lord, but Darkseid had predicted that he was his only minion who would plot against him after his return from the Source Wall. Darkseid’s weakness was a ploy meant to draw out enemies. Vundabarr reminded him that Darkseid taught survival of the strongest, and Darkseid said he once again confused strength with cunning. Darkseid used his omega beam to wipe Vundabarr from existence.
(New Gods Secret Files #1) - Kanto and Virmin Vunderbarr gave the students at Granny Goodness’ Orphanage a history lesson concerning the origins of the Fourth World. Kanto threatened to kill one student, Z, who could not answer a question before Z’s friend X answered for him.
(New Gods Secret Files #1) - Darkseid summoned Kanto and the rest of his Elite for a meeting. Darkseid believed it was time to deliver his last will and testament, telling them that after he was gone whichever one of them was the strongest would succeed him.
(Martian Manhunter II #18, 19) - Darkseid sent Kanto and a squad of Parademons to attack JSA hq. Kanto exposed Star-Spangled Kid to the living death, stealing her soul and leaving her body in a coma, and took the soul back to Apokolips for use in the D.E.M. a terchnoorganic device created by Darkseid to uncover the secrets of the Source. The JSA went to Apokolips to reclaim the Kid’s soul, and allowed themselves to be captured by the Parademons while Manhunter confronted Kanto to settle some of their old scores. Kanto underestimated his mortal opponent and was soon defeated. Kanto sent the Parademons against the JSA as they separated the Kid’s soul from the D.E.M., but they were repulsed.
(Martian Manhunter II #29-31) - Kanto was put in charge of Intergang, and after his associate Richard Guine’s drug ring was broken up by John Jones he killed Guine so he couldn’t implicate Intergang. He sent Parademons to kill John Jones, but Martian Manhunter defeated them, and when he questioned them a failsafe device blew up their heads before they could reveal who they were working for. Kanto tested his drug BZRK out in a rave. The users gained superhuman strength, went on a rampage, and then died. Kanto thought the drug might have uses for his assassins. He confronted Jones and had Intergang goons inject him with BZRK, but Manhunter soon arrived, distracting Kanto and giving Jones the chance to inject BZRK into Kanto. Kanto fled to Apokolips to take the antidote. Kanto then hid in a tesseract, but Manhunter and Jones found him. Kantao used the tesseract to divide Manhunter into the various human personas he’d taken and began to murder them one by one. Jones promised Kanto to reveal the secrets he knew about Earth’s superhumans if Kanto would save his life. This turned out to be a ruse, and Jones let the BZRK take control over him, and as he exploded into flames he seemingly took Kanto with him.
