History(Arkham Asylum: Living Hell #1, 2) - Jane saw herself as a cipher, missing whatever it was that gave other people their identity, so she became a serial killer, impersonating whoever her last victim was. Jane started living life as Arkham's psychologist Dr. Anne Carver after she killed her, subsuming her own identity. She had a session with the Great White Shark, a crooked businessman who played the system with an insanity defense, but now desperately wanted out of Arkham. She bemoaned not being able to leave her job at work, and scared off a date with talk about what she did for a living. She offered to get White transferred to a minimum security prison in exchange for 20 million. She was playing him, intending to adopt his identity. She tried to stab him, but Batman, who'd been watching her, saved him. She pulled a gun on Batman, but he convinced her that she wouldn't want his life, battling evil and madness every night. She broke down and was taken away by Arkham guards. Guard Aaron Cash told Doe her life would be miserable, because Carver had so many friends. Doe said that she knew Cash had romantic feelings for Carver, but, having lived Carver's life, she thought Carver found him repulsive. Cash nearly lost his temper, and demanded to know where Carver's body was, since they only had a head to bury, but Doe smiled and refused to talk.

(Arkham Asylum: Living Hell #3-6) - Corrupt guard Wrigley snuck Doodlebug into the women's wing for some fun. Jane asked Wrigley if he'd do her a favor like he did for all the other inmates, and he refused, saying she was a crazy among crazies. What she really wanted was to get him close enough to kill. Impersonating Wrigley she led Doodlebug back to his cell, and allowed him to jam his cell door open. Jane Doe helped free more of her fellow inmates, causing a massive riot. She told Great White she was going to take him to safety, and he was grateful until she knocked him unconscious and dragged him off. She was upset with him for getting so many new wounds since she'd made a skinsuit to imitate him, so she altered it, and opened his old wounds so they'd match. He was tied up in Mr. Freeze's cell, and she turned down the temperature to kill him, telling him she looked forward to living the high life he had. She prepared to leave Arkham during the madness of the Skarva, demons unleashed by Doodlebug, rampaging in the asylum, but Dumpty spotted her. He was fooled by her White skinsuit, and told her not to worry, everything would be okay now that they were together again. Doe slipped away from Dumpty, who ran into White, who'd escaped but suffered frostbite damage that mutilated his face. Completely unhinged he started stalking Dow, and when spirits of her murder victims started appearing he sent them in the right direction. She almost made it out of Arkham, but was stopped by Batman.
