Powers: As an Amazon Hippolyta was virtually immortal and possessed superhuman strength and durability. she was a brilliant politician and military strategist, and a fierce armed and unarmed combatant.
History: 32,000 years ago a pregnant cavewoman was slain by her mate, and Gaea placed her soul in the Well of Souls. Zeus wanted a new race to bring glory to the Olympians, so the Greek goddesses used the Well of souls to create the Amazons, with Hippolyta as their leader.
(JLA #95, 99 (fb)) - <thousands of years ago> When Greece was young it was infiltrated by the Tenth Circle, vampire cultists that fed off newcomers they drew into the cult. When they expanded their feeding range they were confronted by Queen Hippolyta and the Amazons. After a pitched battle they were banished to the tenth circle of Hell.
(JSA #68) - <October 13-15,1951> Wonder Woman and the Justice Society appeared before HUAC, where they were accused of having ties to the reds because they'd associated with a communist to bring in saboteurs. HUAC demanded they prove themselves good Americans and reveal their secret identities. They all refused, and Green Lantern teleported them out of Washington. At JSA hq they discussed the fact that they'd be wanted men and women if they didn't reveal their identities. They decided it was for the best to disband the Society.
(JSA #72) - <October 30, 1951> Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice Society were convinced into coming out of retirement by the time-travelling JSA. They had to team up to stop Per Degaton, who was going to assassinate President Truman and put the blame on the Justice Society, forever ending their legacy. The teams defeated Degaton, who fled into the timestream. The resulting time distortion caused Wonder Woman and the other Society members to forget their adventure with the JSA.
(JLA #16, 17) - Hippolyta was invited to join the JLA as part of their new lineup. The JLA invited the press to the Watchtower to introduce the new team to the public, and had a join the JLA for a day contest that a man named Retro won. Retro was killed on his way to the Watchtower and replaced by Prometheus. Prometheus set fire to the hydroponic systems that provided the Watchtower with air, and defeated Martian Manhunter, Steel, Huntress and Batman as Hippolyta tried to evacuate the press. Prometheus threatened to kill the press unless Superman committed suicide, but Catwoman, who d been disguised as reporter Cat Grant, defeated him and he was forced to flee. Prometheus had methods of defeating every hero on Earth, but didn't keep files on villains, so the newly reformed Catwoman was capable of besting him.
(JLA #18, 19) - Julian September unhinged the universe s laws of probability with his engine of chance, briefly warping history so that everything worked in his favor. He became President and Hippolyta and the JLA saved him from seven supervillains that tried to kidnap him. Batman destroyed the engine, leading to Julian s disappearance, and several JLA members blinked out of existence. The universe fought against the probability cancer Julian unleashed, with disastrous results associated with the number seven. Atom, the seventh hero to join the Justice League met with the JLA by coincidence, and Oracle unlocked September s research notes. He split seven pohotons to create the Engine of Chance, so Atom shrunk the team to subatomic height and repaired the photons, undoing all the Engine s effects.
(JLA #20, 21) - Adam Strange teleported Hippolyta and the JLA to Rann using zeta-beams, told them they were now his slaves, and forced them to rebuild Rann under the supervision of En Taran Slavemasters. Strange s actions were a pretense for having the JLA construct a giant zeta-beam that teleported the Slavemasters away from Rann.
(JLA #22, 23) - The Star Conqueror put most of the world to sleep, dreaming of a world in which its rule was absolute. The few JLA members still awake were met by Dream, who d received the plea of Michael Haney, a young boy who still believed in heroes, even in the Conqueror s world. Dream warned the JLA that the dreamers would wake to serve and nourish the Conqueror, and send Hippolyta, Green Lantern and Superman into the Dreaming to confront the Star Conqueror. Continent-sized Star Conquerors orbited Earth, preparing to put the world to sleep when their spores sent a signal saying it was safe. Haney s faith in the JLA allowed them to destroy the Conqueror s dream and repulse the spores.
(JLA #23) - <one month later> With the return of Wonder Woman, Hippolyta resigned from the JLA, telling them she was no longer interested in being a superheroine, and preferred having her daughter on the team.
(JLA #29-31) Hippolyta responded to a JSA emergency signal, and joined Wildcat, Flash and Sentinel teaming up with the JLA and battling 5th-Dimensional invader Lkz. It came down to J.J., who possessed the Thunderbolt, and after some prodding, summoned the Thunderbolt, who began a titanic battle with Lkz. Qwsp revealed himself as the instigator of the battle between Lkz and Thunderbolt, a battle that threatened to throw the 5th Dimension into chaos and destroy Earth. Representatives of the 5th Dimension arrested Qwsp, because only mischief was allowed in the 3rd Dimension, and he d gone way past that. Captain Marvel and Green Lantern convinced Thunderbolt and Lkz to merge into one being, ending their war.
(JSA Secret Files #1) - Speed Saunders sent a fax to Hippolyta, Wildcat, Flash, and Sentinel to break the news of Sandman's death. Hippolyta and her fellow JSA members passed the news on to several other heroes and asked them to come to the funeral.
(JSA #1-4) - Hippolyta and several legacy superheroes and original Justice Society members attended the funeral of Sandman. As the service drew to a close the Sons of Anubis attacked the heroes. After the battle Scarab appeared and told the heroes that a threat to Earth’s existence was approaching, and they must reform the Justice Society of America to combat it. The newly reformed JSA found out why Scarab needed their help; a new Dr. Fate was about to be born, and Mordu was trying to locate and kill the Fate-Child. The JSA were charged with finding the child before Mordu. Atom-Smasher traveled to Vancouver with Wildcat and Hourman III and located the Fate-Child. Mordru then appeared out of nowhere, defeated the heroes, and stole the child. Thee JSA pursued Mordru to Fate’s Tower and were once again bested by the villain., but the battle lasted long enough for the Fate-Child to transform into Dr. Fate and trap Mordru inside his amulet. The JSA returned to their hq and named Sand their first chairman/
(JLA #40, 41) - Hippolyta was among the legion of heroes summoned by the JLA to quell worldwide outbreaks of warfare that were incited by Mageddon.
(JLA #48, 49) - The Queen of Fables took over Themyscira and subjugated Hippolyta and the amazons until the JLA defeated her.
(JLA: Our Worlds at War #1) - Hippolyta was aboard the Alien Alliance's space ark when Superman brought Wonder Woman, who'd been gravely injured by an Imperiex Probe, to her.
(Action Comics #781) - Imperiex lost the ability to generate Probes after the JSA destroyed his command ship, so he launched his remaining Probes in full force. One wave attacked the space ark paradocs, which were defended by Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Hippolyta. Hippolyta sacrificed her life to fight them off.
