Immortus has never been able to duplicate the chemical, even with the aid of such brilliant minds as Pasteur, Boyle and Lavoisier. Immortus has started a worldwide criminal organization and amassed tremendous wealth, but this all pales beside hid desire to find true immortality. He discovered a promising young scientist named Niles Caulder, and became a secret benefactor for Niles' research. Niles finally duplicated the immortality chemical when he discovered who his benefactor was. Niles refused to work for Immortus, so Immortus persuaded him by implanting a bomb in Niles' chest. One night Niles snuck into Immortus' home and tricked Immortus into shooting him, in a risky plan to escape the old man's control. Niles succeeded in having the bomb deactivated, but the experience left him a cripple. Immortus would stop at nothing to get the immortality formula, and when Niles became the Chief and formed the Doom Patrol, Immortus would immediately be gunning for them.
(My Greatest Adventure #80)-General Immortus confronted the Doom Patrol on their very first mission. They both vied for the remains of a crashed spaceship, and during the fight the ship took off to return to its' home planet. The Doom Patrol escaped, but General Immortus was left on board. Immortus found an escape pod seconds before the spaceship collided with a mountain range and exploded.
(My Greatest Adventure #84) - Immortus began to worry about his limitless income, which was derived from diamond mines in Africa. He calculated that the mines would be used up in 200 years, and he needed a future source of income. Immortus stole three artifacts known as the Stones of Babylon, hoping to find the ancient treasure of Sumu-Abu. Immortus used radio waves to gain control of Robotman II's body, and forced the hero to dig up the treasure. The Doom Patrol were able to free Robotman, but Immortus escaped.
(Doom Patrol I #88) - Immortus took on the alter ego of the Baron, a gentleman criminal who robbed banks with a series of fantastic devices. He tries to blackmail Chief into giving him the immortality formula, but was sent on the run by the Doom Patrol.
(Doom Patrol V #17) - General Immortus attended a party in North Korea thrown by the Boswicks, an immortal family also known as the Aristocrats. Immortus befriended Byron Boswick centuries ago, and they realized they were kindred spirits who understood the curse of immortality. Veronica Cale, president of Oolong Island attended the party with her bodyguards, Oolong’s resident super team the Doom Patrol. Immortus greeted them, and warned them that Cale was targeted for death. He still wanted the DP and all their allies to die at his hands, and despite his relations to the Aristocrats and North Korea he wouldn't hear of them being a part of the DP‘s demise. Cale was kidnapped by the Aristocrats, and the DP responded.
(Doom Patrol V #20-22) - When the DP were kicked out of Oolong Island, General Immortus approached them, and asked kindly that they forget their past animosities and listen to him. He’d long ago given up plans of world domination when he realized the world wasn’t worth his effort, and he’d recently realized his urges to kill the Doom patrol was simply habitual behavior he needed to drop. He was worried about M.S.E. running Oolong Island, freely admitting that he still thought of no one’s interests except himself. Being immortal he wanted the world he lived in to not be horrible, and foresaw M.S.E. bringing about a worse world. He told the DP they should invade Oolong Island and take it for themselves. After some soul-searching Robotman made the decicion to go along with Immortus. Immortus never doubted they’d see things from his point of view. The DP stormed Oolong, and Immortus contacted Somebody from his private sub, telling him his digusting notion of a corporate state was about to end. Somebody called him a fool, and told him corporate states already existed, and were the future of the world. Mr. Somebody decided the fight with the DP was pointless, and abandoned Oolong.
